Centerville, Carroll advance to state finals

The Centerville and Carroll boys soccer teams will both play for state championships.

Centerville topped Olentangy Orange 2-1 in a Division I state semifinal on Tuesday at Hilliard Bradley High School behind a goal and an assist from leading scorer Memme Onwudiwe. Andrew Roop scored the second goal for the Elks, who will play in their seventh title game in program history. They have won one state title, in 1984.

Centerville, ranked No. 5 in the state, will play top-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius, which beat Toledo St. John’s Jesuit 5-2 in the other semifinal, at 7 p.m. Friday at Crew Stadium in Columbus.

Carroll got three goals from Vonne Byrd and topped Columbus Bishop Watterson 4-1 in a D-II state semifinal at Bellbrook High School. Justin Mitchell notched his 25th goal of the season in the first half for Carroll’s other score.

The Patriots will face No. 7 Richfield Revere at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Crew Stadium to try to win their second state championship in three seasons.

Semifinal halftime updates: Both the Centerville and Carroll boys soccer teams lead their state semifinals at halftime.

Centerville (19-0-2) is up 2-0 against Olentangy Orange in a Division I semifinal at Hilliard Bradley High School. Senior Memme Onwudiwe scored the Elks’ first goal 5:24 into the game, and he assisted on a goal by junior Andrew Roop with 8:04 left in the first half.

Carroll (17-2-2) is up 2-0 against Columbus Bishop Watterson in a D-II semifinal at Bellbrook High School. Justin Mitchell scored his 25th goal of the season, and Vonne Byrd followed about four minutes later with a second goal to set the lead for Carroll.

Both would play in state finals at Crew Stadium in Columbus on Friday with wins.

Congrats to both programs…nice to see the Dayton area continually represents the State Tourney in Columbus…best of luck to Carroll and Cville… 2 of the best programs in town…bring home the hardware!!!
