Miller leads Wayne past Centerville 34-10

CENTERVILLE — Wayne quarterback Braxton Miller passed for 225 yards (just 5 short of his career high) and two touchdowns as the Warriors topped Centerville 34-10 on Thursday at Centerville Stadium in a game broadcast on ESPNU.

Wayne led 27-3 at halftime and held Centerville’s GWOC-leading offense to 159 yards. The Warriors improved to 5-3 and got an important boost in computer points heading into next week’s game against Northmont.

Centerville (6-2) lost its second straight after a 6-0 start. Elks QB Jon Overstreet scored the team’s only touchdown from 15 yards in the fourth quarter and finished with 102 yards.

6:02, fourth: Centerville’s Kyle Rose intercepted a Miller pass and returned it to the Wayne 26-yard line, but the Elks continue to trail 34-3. With the game pretty well in hand, I’ll be heading down to the field soon for post-game interviews. I’ll get a final update after.

End third quarter: Wayne leads Centerville 34-3. Centerville has third-and-5 from its own 46-yard line as the fourth quarter begins. Wayne QB Braxton Miller has completed 16-of-20 passes for 214 yards and 2 TDs.

1:05, third: Wayne QB Braxton Miller completed a 65-yard drive with a 9-yard scoring pass to Armani Miller to increase Wayne’s lead to 34-3. On the drive, Braxton Miller complete a pump-fake, stop-and-go 30-yard pass to Armani Miller that fit into a small space for the completion, one of his best of the season.

5:48, third: After three possessions, neither team has scored in the third quarter, but Wayne is clearly moving more to the run and RB Anthone Taylor to burn clock. Of 12 Warriors plays this half, Taylor has rushed the ball on nine of them. Wayne continues to lead 27-3.

Halftime: Wayne scored on a run, pass, kickoff return and fumble recovery to take a 27-3 lead on Centerville at halftime. Wayne QB Braxton Miller has completed 10-of-12 passes for 142 yards and a 32-yard score with some of the most confident and accurate passes of his career. Wayne drove the ball to a fourth-and-1 at the Centerville 42-yard line following a Centerville missed field goal as Wayne coach Jay Minton let the final 41 seconds run off the clock to get to halftime.

10:45, second: On Centerville’s first play following Wayne’s kickoff return TD, Centerville QB Jon Overstreet pitched a ball right that fell to the field. Wayne’s Teven Williams picked up the fumble and returned it 32 yards for a score and a 27-3 Wayne lead.

11:00, second: Immediately after Centerville drove to cut Wayne’s lead, the Warriors’ Jordan Morgan returned the kickoff 86 yards for a score and a 20-3 Wayne lead.

11:13, second: Centerville’s Chris Kuzma booted a 29-yard field goal after a 13-play drive to cut Wayne’s lead to 13-3.

End first quarter: Wayne continues to lead 13-0, and Centerville will have third-and-9 at the 12-yard line when the second quarter begins. Centerville got a favorable call on first-and-10 from the 13 when QB Jon Overstreet appeared to fumble trying to pitch left, and Wayne recovered, but referees ruled the ball an incomplete pass.

Two observations about the ESPN broadcast: The stadium lights are much, much brighter for the show, and the 2-minute television timeouts are unusual for these high school games.

4:53, first: Wayne QB Braxton Miller used a swift fake handoff to RB Anthone Taylor, rolled left, stopped and zipped a pass that Marshall Peterson ran in for a 32-yard TD. The extra point was blocked, making it 13-0 Wayne.

7:55, first: Four plays after Centerville muffed Wayne’s first punt, Warriors RB Anthone Taylor scored from 7 yards to give Wayne a 7-0 lead. QB Braxton Miller gained 4 yards on a third-and-3 from the Centerville 11, but he paid for it by being upended nearly out of bounds. He handed off to Taylor on the next play for the score.

7:05 p.m.: Centerville received the opening kickoff.

6:55 p.m.: A skydiver just landed on the 10-yard line, and another came flying in with a trailing American flag to the other 10 to deliver the game ball.

6:25 p.m.: Miller and Bennett just met at midfield to be filmed talking by an ESPN camera, underlining the attention they’ll receive in the broadcast.

Pregame: When we were here for the Alter-Centerville game on Sept. 10, we thought it was one of the most unique atmospheres we had seen in the area. Well, this one is a little different, too.

Wayne and Centerville are 80 minutes away from playing their rivalry game that is big in any season. But this time, the game is being broadcast on ESPNU, making it unusual in its own way. It’s the first time a game between two area teams has been on a national broadcast, and that means plenty more has to be done for it.

The parking lot isn’t quite as full this early before the game as for the Alter game, but there are microphones elevated in the stands, raised platforms behind both end zones for cameras and commentators on the camera desk above the press box.

This is the third time Wayne will be on ESPNU this season, after the opener against Moeller, during which Warriors quarterback Braxton Miller rushed for more than 200 yards in the first half, and the second game against Canton McKinley, which Miller missed because he suffered a high ankle sprain late in the game against Moeller.

There’s no question Miller, the Ohio State commitment rated by some as the top high school senior quarterback in the country, is a big reason ESPN picked this game. But ESPN says is also looks for long-standing rivalries and highly ranked teams where it can find them for these broadcasts.

Centerville is 6-1 after last week’s loss against Northmont and features three D-I recruits on defense in lineman Michael Bennett (Ohio State), lineman Kyle Rose (West Virginia) and linebacker Mike Replogle (Indiana).

Wayne is 4-3, but the Warriors are still in a good position to make the playoffs if they can win out with a remaining schedule that includes Centerville, Northmont (5-2) and Fairmont (2-5). That makes this game all the more crucial for Wayne.

Good job thus far, Mr. Nagle. On TV it appears Centerville does not have to speed at cornerback to handle Wayne’s running backs and receivers.

Following on-line from Columbus, Oh. An uncommon set of circumstances thus far for ELks, Warriors not always a great second half team. Still two quarters to play…

Centerville is not a playoff team. So far Centerville has lost to all half way decent teams. Last year Centerville got lucky and played Wayne without Miller. Centerville played poor teams and can not compete with a good team. I guess Centerville should stop bragging about beating a division III team (Alter) and some average Cincy teams (e.g. Lakota). I am not for wayne but think Centerville is full of a bunch of Snobes.

I notice no Centerville fans blogging. This is by far the biggest rivalry in the Dayton area and it looks like Wayne just knocked Centerville out of the playoffs. Not like Centerville WOULD have made it pass the first game anyway, lol.

Dale1, we in Centerville aren’t blogging because: a) we might be AT the game; or b) we have lives. Good game Wayne. Congratulations! (Dale, good luck with life.)

Coach Ullery Please do not enter any of your players in our Punt/Pass & Kick Contest as they do not qualify in any category especially passing. One dimensional team RUN - Coach Ullery did you pull your team and not let them shake hands with Wayne either? POOR LOSERS

Last year Braxton did play against centerville in a 42-20 dominating win. Wayne dominated again this year.It was evident after the first quarter who was going to win Kyle Nagel can’t spell

My name is Snobes. No one in my family is on the Centerville team, as “liberty ” has stated. “liberty” must have meant snobs…happens all the time.

Note to Coach Ullery, the run offense does not work anymore and only gets us to the first round of the playoffs sometimes. Time to rethink that.

The Elks are an embarrassment, and Ullery and his staff are the most overrated coaches in the area. Five division one scholarships and they lose to both teams that are decent in their conference. Elks are arrogant winners and crybaby losers. Same story for Centerville, wait until next year! State Champions, not the Elks!

Congrats to Wayne, you have a great group of kids! Glad Centerville’s coaching staff showed some respect by shaking hands at the end of the game…but then again, the cameras were ROLLING!

Wayne played better than Centerville last night. How about you yahoos that know nothing about football stop bashing Centerville and their coaching staff, You probably are one of those people that live through your son and his high school sports. Let the Coaches coach and Players play. Your job is to parent, Sometimes you have to cut the cord

Dear fballfan, LOL! Did I strike a nerve? Good! Your team got spanked…twice! My kid is in the band, and your community not only disrespected the kids that played the game, but boo’d the Northmont band kids at halftime. No class. Yes, my job is as a parent, and I teach my kids respect no matter what the situation, win or lose.

Wayne = Tough & Discipllined Cville = Soft & Unimaginitive I watched the game from the East coast and was impressed by Wayne and equally unimpressed by Cville’s showing. I am not a fan of either school just like watching football.

For everyone that needs to re-hash the Northmont fiasco, Coach Ullery pulled the kids before the handshake because the Northmont players were already stomping and spitting on the “C” on the field, pushing and shoving players, and starting verbal altercations with the coaches. Any hope of sportsmanship was already gone. Wayne played better, and won with class, and while you are all having a great time bashing Centerville, the reason none of the Elk fans have spoken up is because they don’t need to cry win they lose or gloat when they win. Great game, Warriors, and best of luck to Miller.

I have watched and coached aginst both org teams and I find it strange that at the high school level that Centerville dose not have anyone that can throw the football, which is why they dont play the pass very well .If you dont practice aginst it U cant defend aginst it. dont be shocked if they dont win at springfield (they run and pass) and for the record I am from the East cost (SC) region 2:IV A home of Champions

Wayne would be undefeated if Miller had stayed healthy this season. When he is 100%, they cannot be beaten

So..how does Braxton Miler..a lifelong Springfield resident..end up playing for Wayne…Isn’t this called illegal recruiting?…has the DDN looked into this?

October 18, 2010 10:44 AM | Link to this

Actually, Miller lives in Huber. That is how he plays for Wayne. Jay, maybe you should look into these things before you comment. Do you have any proof Miller was recruited?

My question is: why does Miller spend his whole life in Springfield..then show up in a apartment in Huber Heights where he then plays football..just doesnt seem like a coincedence..
