Belton to Belton: Now hear this

Clay Belton was waiting for little brother Cameron Belton at halftime of Friday’s game at Centerville.

The former T-Bolts standout QB had seen enough from Cameron: 3 INTs.

Whatever was said worked. Cameron Belton delivered several clutch second-half strikes as Northmont hung a surprising 24-21 double-OT loss on Elks.

Belton completed just 11 of 24 passes for 96 yards, but two were for touchdowns. More importantly, he didn’t have another pick after the first half.

Clay Belton is sitting out at Findlay this season after transferring from Maryland and prior to that Miami.

Despite those three INTs, the T-Bolts trailed just 14-7 at the break.

“I thought, we’re in pretty good shape here,” Northmont coach Lance Schneider said.

“We’re just got to stop giving them the ball.”

Not quite. Northmont fumbled the ball away in the second half on Centerville’s 2. Had the Bolts scored, there would have been no extra sessions.

That highly touted Elks defense allowed its first first-quarter points this season when Josh McClain returned an Elks fumble on the opening kickoff 19 yards for a score. And more was to come.

Northmont had 247 yards of balanced offense: 120 rushing and 127 passing. Centerville countered with 237 yards of offense, but just 8 passing.

“Our offensive line played a great game because we didn’t get sacked and we ran the ball very effectively,” Schneider said. “Much more than I expected going in.

“I thought we were going to have to throw the ball 40 times to beat them.”

Other highlights:

• Centerville’s John Griffith had 2 INTs.

• Elks QB Jon Overstreet had 123 rushing yards, most of which came on Centerville’s two early scoring drives.

• Logan Murphy missed a field goal earlier in the game (not 100% sure on the distance, but it wasn’t a gimme).

• Northmont had 16 first downs and 19:45 minutes of possession.

• Centerville had 17 first downs and 28:15 of possession.

• Centerville’s Kyle Rose had 12 tackles, 3 for a loss; Mike Thomas 10 tackles, 2 for a loss.

• Northmont’s Kaleb Ringer had 19 tackles; Willie Myers 9 tackles, 1 for a loss, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery.

• The Schneiders, Lance and his father Mike, are a combined 6-0 in overtime games in their careers. Mike, the Bolts’ QB coach, previously was the head coach at Miamisburg and Wayne.

I was at the game last night. I cant say I agree with the play calling for Centerville. The run game was working in the 1st quarter but Northmont made great adjustments. I think Centerville needs to put the ball in the air more. Great sportmanship from boh teams in this rivalry

Great high school football game. I would question the sportmanship comment by C-Ville. Centerville walked off without shaking hands after the game. What was that about?

Both coaches met at the middle of the field and shook hands and witnessed some taunting and words exchanged by both teams players and thought it was a volatile situation…thought it better to not go through with the handshake…probably a good move to avert further escalation…I agree that northmont made great adjustments defensively at half time and shut down the elks running attack…elks did not adjust their play calling in return…

Marc, exactly how did Centerville’s defense allow their first first-quarter points when they were the team that received the opening kickoff and then fumbled the ball to Northmont?

Great game Friday night! Northmonts offensive line was on it! As for the unsportsman like conduct at the end of the game, if there was tension between teams, I understand the decision that was made, but to a spectator, it showed poorly on Centerville’s coaching staff, not the kids. Great group of kids from both schools.

Talked with the back-judge who was assigned to the GWOC Classic between 2 heavy-weights at the Hanover college game next day & he said it was as good & as clean a game as he has ever called. Says everything about the Kid’s, Coach’s & School’s.

Proud to be a t-bolt. Partial to the o-line and proud of the group and especially #52 for coming back.

Once again C’ville resembles their coaching staff and they get arrogant and fall to a team that they should have beaten. Good luck in the playoffs ELKS, if you make it. Colerain will kill the Elks!

Centerville coach again makes bad play calling like he did 2 years ago when Bolts upset them at their stadium back then. They are not a power house as some thinks or ullery wishes. He needs to retire and let a new young coach take over. His military coaching will continue to down fall

I was truely embarassed the way that our coach did his stupid play calling along with lack of sportsmanship showing at end of the day. The worse was when I saw for myself when I and a few other fathers voiced our opinion to the coaching staff from our stands and in return Ullery and his staff wanted to fight us. It is time for our school board to relieve Ullery of his athletic duties completely.
