Alter coach Ed Domsitz: Ain’t gonna be no rematch
Alter coach Ed Domsitz desperately tried to invoke the Apollo Creed rule following Friday’s 24-7 loss at Centerville: Ain’t gonna be no rematch.
But he couldn’t find the right words and instead fumbled the no-rematch line. That was fitting, because the Knights did likewise for much of the DDN Game of the Week. Nothing, it seemed, went as planned.
“I don’t know. It’s a tough thing,” he said.
“We’re D-IV. We can’t play up like this every week. We didn’t have to. The question was, could we do that one night? And we did.”
Alter and Coldwater might have something in the works for Week 3 next season. Centerville, meanwhile, still has an opening after already committing to the Kirk Herbstreit Classic and a game with Cincinnati Elder.
Was this game worth playing, for Alter and Centerville? Of course, both Domsitz and Elks coach Ron Ullery agreed. The interest it generated in both communities and among alumni was like nothing experienced ever before.
“This was amazing,” Domsitz said. “It was everything you would hope it would be, not having played for 40 years. You’ve got two great programs with great traditions. Over the years, both teams have earned this, what they were going to see in terms of the atmosphere.
“It’s almost like we mirror each other. Our kids don’t want to hear that and their kids don’t either, but they went to school with a lot of the same kids who they faced (Friday).”

Even though Alter is D-IV, the Knights will win 7 or 8 games and provide Centerville more second-level computer points than beating Hamilton or Miamisburg or another crappy D-I team that will win 2 games.

it’s sad really, all the obsession with a game with means nothing to the kids’ future. so much time and effort and gobs of money for what? and what a fine example of english grammer, “ain’t gonna be no” what a ding-a-ling

Did you read the article to suggest that Ed Domsitz said “ain’t gonna be no”? Read it again. The article was making a popular culture to the movie “Rocky” in which a key character used that phrase. As for what the game means to the kids’ future, the education these young men get on the field of competition will benefit them in life just as much as the education they get in the classroom.

The game is over. Who won? Who lost? To those who won, it means that whatever they did to do the winning…it was true and valiant. To those who lost, it means that they should examine their shortcomings and decide to excell…or copy a winning strategy from thier victor. I saw/was there/witnessed two powerhouse teams last night. I smile at both teams. Why? The winners can understand their plan came together…the losers can plan that the next time they plan a game…more planning is needed. Both teams are exemplary…thank God these young people exist and know what is needed to excell in whatever they attempt to do. Winners?!…Losers?! it’s all part of life…and sometimes it’s not how you want it to turn out. The old cliche’: “Sometimes your the windshield….sometimes you’re the bug”. Sorry…it turns out simply that way sometimes…despite your non simple alternatives.

Congrats to Centerville, looks like they might be fore real this year. This might have been an even bigger rival-game than Alter-Fairmont since so many of the Alter kids are actually from Centerville. Most of all, what does this mean for Fairmont later this season? Well, at least they’ll (probably) win spirit chain.

Centerville is for real…right. Until their 1940’s offense catches up and they play a system from 2010…will be a first round out. No QB that can pass with all that talent in CVille..why? No QB wants in that system.

When Alter joined the GCL, each of the teams in the small school division played one of the teams from the large school division (Moeller, Xavier, Elder, LaSalle) each year. The rationale was that there were long standing rivalries between some of the small schools and the large schools in Cincinnati that the fans wanted to keep. After about 8 or 10 years, the small schools had lost every game to the big schools (usually by 30-40 points) and the GCL dropped the tradition. D-IV schools playing D-1 schools is not good for the small schools and it hardly serves a good practice session for the big schools. It’s one thing for your team with mostly 170 pound linemen (real weight not football program weight) to face one or two 235 pounders on the other team, but when you get a full game of pileups of seven big guys and some smaller ones the smaller kids are going to get hurt. That’s why the GCL stopped the inter-divisional football games and it is the reason why Alter and other small schools shouldn’t play D-1 shools (Alter has been lucky that Fairmont’s football program has not really developed or the injury situation would have developed sooner.) It’s not in the interest of your kids safety to put them in a situation where injuries are inevitable. Some of the Alter’s fans got a little carried away claiming that Alter’s D-IV state champs could handle the better teams in D-I. They were wrong and if they’d been around long enough to witness Alter’s games against Moeller, Xavier, Elder and LaSalle back in the 70’s and 80’s they would have understood the difference between D-1 and D-IV. Alter’s kids play hard and are well coached. They aren’t all blessed with D-I football physiques. That doesn’t diminish their accomplishments one bit. They are justifiably proud of their state championships and Centerville should be proud of the year after year excellence their football teams display. But playing each other is no more a good idea than it would be for UD to play the Buckeye’s in football.

Centerville would not beat Alter year in and year out. This was a depleted Alter team a year after losing some of its best talent to graduation. They lost to big bad Centerville by 17 points. A D1 should, based on the uninformed opinion of Centerville fans, beat a DIV by 40-50 points every time. The 2007-2008-2009 Alter Knights would have beat the Centerville teams from those years. More kids does equal more talent but there is the exception to the rule in every case and Alter is the exception in this one. I’d put that Alter team up against ANY Division 1 in Dayton anytime. If you think a 17 point win at home vs. a Division 4 is domination, you’re very uninformed.

Alter got the whippin they deserved. Purposely dictating your enrollment so you can sandbag and play podunk farm schools just to win state titles for Domsitz is sad. Why couldn’t Domsitz win at D1 and D2 with Northmont and Trotwood? Because he’s overrated as a coach, that’s why.

Big Dog - It’s easy now to say that Alter from 2007-2009 would beat Centerville from 2007-2009. Unfortunately, it’s just not true. You’re going to find that Centerville’s team this year is just like those in the recent past. And Alter may go through the rest of the season unbeaten. Yet Centerville would have won all of those games against Alter, had they played.

IBALL, Please know your facts before u post. I was on the Northmont 1993 team that Domsitz took to the playoffs against ST. X. First playoff appearance in school history. Although, I do agree he can’t coach that well.

Alter vs Centerville was a very good ideal and game for the community. On the night they played the elks had a few more horses than Alter plain and simple. As fir the do do bird who said that Domsitz cant coach what teams have you been watching over the last 4 years. He teams were one of the best trained and coached teams in the entire state. You dont win two state titles and almost a third by one point being a mediocre coach. It just doesnt happen. Again I dont see this Centerville team really being that good because they cant really defend the pass and there runningbacks are division 4 quality. They are actually terrible, with that huge line they had they should of rushed for at least 500 yards rushing. Colrain and wayne will both beat them like they stole something. Watch

Centerville’s defense is top 5 caliber in the state and will keep them in, and win, most games this year. They’ll be 10-0 and 1-2 in points in the region, and move up weekly from current 10th state ranking. But their offense is only good enough to get them to the regional semis, where again they’ll meet their demise. Same old same old.

To “just don’t get it” (twice) and “not so fast” (twice) (same guy - Centerville is actually terrible you say? You are clearly delusional. Centerville is very good this year. Your post will be more credible if you don’t resort to ridiculous statements. Try again.

It was not close but it was still fun to watch. Alter played hard right to the final play. Centerville was clearly the better team. Both programs played with spirit and class not always shown in the comments. Both coaches showed guts in scheduling, Alter’s for obvious reasons and Centerville’s for risking a loss that would mean a heck of a lot more than computer points. This is what high school sports is suppose to be about. It was an experience that the kids should be proud of and something they can remember forever.

Geesh, you can pretty much toss the D4 and D1 arguments out the door..its a public school drawing from only it’s area to a PRIVATE school that can draw from anywhere! Palleze, Alter can stack up against anyone, year in and year out because anyone from anywhere can play for them! Centerville only gets Centerville kids… please wake up.

Does anyone remember when Alter was D-II, and Centerville refused to play them? Now they want to play a D-IV Alter squad. Has Centerville stepped up and asked to play Marshall? They complain about having to schedule out-of-state schools and such, but do they bother to ask the City League? Yes, they would crush all but Marshall and Dunbar, but why won’t they play the big two?

City League Croney - where do you get your information? Centerville never refused to play Alter. And Centerville would gladly play Marshall and Dunbar, and beat them both. Also, please show me where they complain about having to schedule out-of-state schools and such. You just can’t do it. You have written a lot of comments, none of which are true. Please back up your statements with facts.

This game was played because Alter called and asked for a game. Elks said “sure”. It wasn’t like some imply, that Alter is down so lets play ‘em. Alters only score came on an 80 yard punt return when Elks only had 10 on the field. Home field advantage? Come on, Alter has played there many times during regular season and palyoffs, and its a 10 minute bus ride from Alter to the stadium. Alter played very well, and should be commended. Now some of their fans need to quit the trash talk, accept the loss to a better team, and move on. Good luck the rest of the season.

Ok, so I was wrong. C’ville did not win 42-14. I was impressed with Alter’s defense. They played hard for 60 minutes. C’ville out matched them on offense due to C’ville’s great d-line. It was a great game to watch from both sides. I think most alter fans were really dissapointed to lose. Heck, after winning 32 or 34 straight, it is something they don’t know how to accept. Hoo-rah for both schools. Alter will win state this year providing injuries don’t kill them. C’ville, however, won’t get past the 2nd game of the playoffs…..as usual. As I said in last week’s lbog, the two best QB’s in the game played for Alter. C’vill’s QB is a running back….and pretty good too.

I was so impressed with Alter’s Defense. They made up for for their size with a lot of speed. I think the DDN blew the score way out of proportion. Walloped is not an accurate description of the game. Without the turnover in the first quarter, Alter clearly had the momentum from the beginning. 17 points is not a blowout.

KJB - No, the score was not a blowout, but Centerville did “wallop” Alter. Look at the stats. Negative two yards rushing for Alter, a team known for its great rushing game. Alter scored on special teams. Offense vs Defense was 24-0, Centerville. But better yet, watch a replay of the game. Centerville dominated both lines of scrimmage. I’d say walloped is right.

Nothing makes me happier than this butt kicking. Kids from Centerville (who aren’t catholic and because they got recruited), go to Alter to be on State Championship team. Even though, by the number of students, Alter isn’t Division I, they should be, because they get to RECRUIT anyone and everyone in a 4 county area without any regard of jurisdication. OHSAA has got it wrong for decades. Give the parochial schools their own division in high school sports and then let’s see who dominates. Alter would never win another team State Championship.

I Alter could only recruit from the city that they’re in they couldn’t win a game against a 6th. grade girls football team.
