Who will win Alter-Centerville?

We’ve made our picks, now we need yours.

We bounced around some thoughts in the office this afternoon about the Alter-Centerville football game coming on Friday, Sept. 10. Not only is it one of the most anticipated area matchups in the past decade, but it’s also one built for speculation with such little precedent.

So, let’s hear it. Two-time defending state Division IV champion vs. area D-I power. Both ranked No. 1 in their divisions in the DDN ratings. Both 2-0. Both hungry to face the other.

Who wins?

Our picks

Tom Archdeacon, sports columnist: Centerville 24-17

Mike Hartsock, sports director, WHIO-TV: Centerville 27-24

Brian Kollars, sports editor: Alter 14-10

Kyle Nagel, reporter: Centerville 28-21

Marc Pendleton, reporter: Centerville 21-14

Now it’s your turn …

I’m voting for Alter. Of course we all know Mike Hartsock makes it known thru the years that he doesn’t like GCL much less Alter so he will never vote Alter. It’s no surprise Mike.

come on the elks are a puffed up bully who likes to pick on smaller or weaker schools to make themselves look good but cannot beat any of the cincy schools. as for the comment about kettering being filled with popus a-holes, well this comment must be from some ignorant country bumkin who doesnt understand high school football. Alter will win because they are just a better coached football team and the kids simply know how to play as a team. Lastly, Centerville lets keep it clean because we all know how dirty you all can be.

Two very well Coached Football teams and Two Outstanding Football teams . Kettering Alter will probably win the State Of Ohio Championship ( Again ) in Div IV and the Centerville Elks are on a tougher road in Div I but Just might have the best defensive unit in the State of Ohio . The Elks win this contest with the Mighty Alter Knights .

I’m a Carroll student. I think Alter will win, but I’m hoping Centerville does.

I’m still a pecker, but I think the “Papists” will win. Now….If only I could get away with punching one more player of the opposing team….

I have to go with Centerville just because it is a home game for the Elks. Very hard for any team let alone Alter to go into that environment and come out with the win.

I hope Alter wins. They will if Centerville doesn’t cheat and play dirty. Their fans are nuts and rude even in childrens sports. But if it’s a good clean, fair called game, it will be a good one. As far as Mike Hartsock, he’s a joke. He doesn’t give any team their due (unless it’s Centerville). He’s nothing but a big mouth.

If the Alter All-Star team wins wouldn’t that help the OHSAA understand a little more how the playing field is not equal in Ohio? I know they don’t care but give me a break. A Div 4 school playing a HS with 8,000 students. Good Luck against Clinton Massie Boys. What a title to bring home…

We’ll be tailgating early for this game. What a fantastic matchup for this early in the season. Elks win this one but Alter is going to come prepared and give them everything they’ve got. A loss here will not hurt their chances for another state title run. I hope everyone stays healthy and both programs go on to great things this year.

Butler Aviators bruised and beat the Knights 21-14 in the tune up scrimmage, so unless Alter recently got more physical, the Elks should win at home. The defense that can stop this type of offensive scheme, they both run, will win. Kicking game could be the difference.

delmer, To make a statement like that about a hard working group of kids means you must be real a$$ hole!

fed up, C’vile only has approximately 3,000 kids, not 8,000. UD couldn’t handle 8,000 undergrads!! Go Knights

No, C-ville, YOU must be in denial. There is no need for name-calling when someone exposes the well-known truth. You obviously don’t know ANY of their players. Don’t give me the crap about the weight programs being better at C-ville than everywhere else. Typical Elks, always blaming someone else who they think are beneath them. However, I think C-ville does win the game, which they need more than Alter does for the playoffs. My previous comment got deleted because we can’t afford to upset the “money people”. So, I call them like I see them, nothing to do with me being part of an anatomy. That’s like blaming the bank teller for them reporting a robbery.

Regardless of all opinions, this is great for Dayton area football.

Won’t even be close. C-ville by 4 touchdowns, maybe more. I have no interest either in who wins, but just C-ville is loaded, and Alter hasn’t played anybody yet this year (two bad teams back to back).

delmer WOW! ever met an Elk? ever taken your kid to conditioning at 4:30am all summer? ever watch a boy become a man because of the discipline, teamwork, and dedication that a football team such as C’ville demands? NO I am not a typical cville resident. I am a divorced single mom. I work full time and put in many overtime hours every week. I want the BEST for my son, but I demand he give the same. ELKS football has taught him many lessons important to transitioning to an adult, one of which is understanding why some people are just plain rude. The players are high school students. They are all motivated to win. How about as adults we set good examples and show some sportsmanship? YES, I say GO ELKS, but my son and my money go to that program. I wish the Knights luck! and I find it a shame that people can be so ugly about a high school match that could very well be the best game of the year. Grow up! My kid could surely teach you a lesson or two.

About the voting on who you think will win the game? Why have the choice of “Don’t care”? If someone doesn’t care then they won’t vote!

This will be a great game for the Kettering/Centerville area that can hopefully become an annual (or at least more frequent) game. The pressure to win is all on Centerville though who has much more to lose from this game than Alter does.

Some people that write comments are really hateful, especially toward Centerville residents, including high school kids. It’s hard to fathom. It says more about the person writing the comments than anything else. This will be a close game, but Centerville should win it. I’ll say 28-21.

C’mon, y’all. A lot of these kids played together in Wee Elks or other youth programs, grew up in the same neighborhood, played together, go to church together, and still have respect and friendship for each other. Every school has SOME fans who misbehave, but by and large there is no need for name-calling, certainly not in this forum. Let the young men and coaches fight this rivalry on the field, and good luck and good health to all!

ALTER…. Div 1 -vs- D4. only based on male student enrollment, right ?? Alter should play Elks, Waynes, Tbolts of the GWOC agreed, but simply because they are a d4 team should not take away from their talent and what they just possibly WILL do against the ELKS this evening. Go Alter….

My bad - I meant there is almost 9,000 kids in Centerville schools. Either way, have you looked at Alter High School and then looked at Centerville High School. The only way Alter has the ability to even schedule a game like this is because they can choose from a number of athletes from around the miami valley, or they can choose Alter, to go there. That makes a school like Alter a lot of money (sports). That’s probably the reason their band has like 10 members. It doesn’t make money and it would push up their enrollment.

Having two girls graduate from Alter and a son that played 4 years at C’ville, I can tell you that both schools bring their teams to play. Both schools have excellent conditioning programs. Both are well coached and both have excellent atheletes. C’vill is much deaper, has 4 division 1 players playing, plus, an o-line that is big and fast, and a bruising fullback that carries 6-8 players with him for 5-6 yards per carry. Boykin is a big game player and I look for a breakout from him tonight. Alter, on the other hand is better coached, has two outstanding quarterbacks, the likes C’ville has not seen since Herbstreit. The sophomore has a cannon for an arm. I saw him hit a reciever at 57 yards on a rope…honestly, the most promising young QB I have ever seen in 50 years of loving h/s football. He will show you some great highlites…I promise. However, Centerville wins 42-14.
