Wayne to play in Herbstreit Series at Ohio Stadium

The Wayne High School football team will be one of eight to play in the Ohio portion of the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series at Ohio Stadium during Labor Day weekend.

The Warriors moved their scheduled game against Canton McKinley to the Herbstreit Series and will play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5. That will follow Dublin Coffman’s game against Westerville South in the doubleheader, and both games will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Two more games will be played on Monday, Sept. 6, in the four-game event.

It will be Wayne’s second consecutive game to open the season broadcast on an ESPN platform. Wayne coach and athletic director Jay Minton said the Warriors will open their season on Sunday, Aug. 29, against Moeller as part of a doubleheader at St. Xavier High School in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown. Broadcast information for that game will be determined later, Minton said.

It will be Wayne’s second matchup with McKinley in consecutive seasons. Last year, the Warriors topped the Bulldogs 27-14 at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium.

That game was a one-year commitment. Minton said the schools created a new two-year deal that included Wayne traveling to McKinley this season and McKinley coming to Wayne in 2011.

But, with the Herbstreit Series opportunity — and concerns that construction to Wayne’s Heidkamp Stadium could create complications for a major home game in 2011 — convinced the Warriors to move the game to Ohio Stadium. The schools also added a year onto their contract, which means they’ll play in Columbus this season, at Canton in 2011 and at Wayne in 2012.

“It’s exciting any chance you have to play in the Shoe, and it’s great exposure and opportunity for our kids,” Minton said. “Plus, it’s a motivating thing. They know if they’re not prepared, it’s going to be on national television.”

Tickets will go on sale June 1. Adult tickets are $15, and student tickets are $10. They can be purchased through the participating schools or on the event’s website.

The event will also host four games at Cowboys Stadium on Monday, Sept. 6.
