Fairmont promotes football assistant to head coach

Andy Aracri, a member of the Fairmont High School football staff for nine seasons, has been promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach, Firebirds athletic director Brian Donoher said.

Aracri, who was a three-year starter at defensive line for Fairmont before playing at Miami University, replaces Brian Blevins, who resigned last month.

Donoher said the 32-year-old Aracri handled operation of the program after Blevins resigned and has proven he’s ready for a head coaching opportunity.

“He’s a Fairmont guy,” Donoher said. “He grew up in Kettering, played for Fairmont and learned under two great coaches at Miami in Randy Walker and Terry Hoeppner. He’s passionate about Fairmont and the kids in Kettering.”

Aracri was a second-team All-Ohio selection as a senior at Fairmont in 1995 before walking on at Miami. By his sophomore year, Aracri was named the RedHawks’ outstanding defensive lineman and became an All-Mid-American Conference selection.

Sweet, he allowed Alter to score 40+ points last year, I hope his offense is as bad as his defense. Maybe he can run the option better than he defends the option.

Eagle-Last time I checked coaches are on the sidelines with headphones on and clipboards in their hands, not in pads on the field. I’m sure the fact that Alter scored 40+ points has to do with the players in the game.

This is a GREAT day for Fairmont Football. Andy will do a good job as coach at Fairmont. I know first hand how passionate he is about Fairmont and the game of football. He has all the respect of the players, parents, faculty, and alumni of Fairmont. All you doubters wait and see as Fairmont will suceed on the football field with Aracri at the helm!!

Alter tried this in the 90’s with Dan Anderson. He was an Alter grad who played at Pitt and then came back to teach and coach. It didn’t work out at all. Sometimes new blood is needed, especially when you are trying to change the culture.

KJB-Anderson in ‘96 took a bunch of no-names to the playoffs when not everyone made the playoffs. He was a great coach.

The problem isn’t the coaches. The problem is if you are good at basketball or football you don’t go to Fairmont. Same thing with Beavercreek. The good athletes just choose other schools.

Fairmont has had a pretty stout defense under Andy…do your homework before replying! As a former student, player and current fan, I am happy with the choice made…the problem with the program is dedication of the athletes and students…get them on board and the sky is the limit JMO

Firebird fan a stout defense has not been seen at fairmont since Coach Derr went to Jefferson. The defense the last two years has been a joke, Alter has only punted once in two years. That is not stout, it is stale and weak. Attitude starts at the top and works it’s way down.

no talented male basketball or football players goes to fairmont, there guys athletics is a joke. They will never beat alter any time soon, there freshman and jv teams are garbage as expected.

Do you forget the basketball team was one win away from state this year at Fairmont. The girls basketball team went to state. It’s ignorant to say stuff like “no talented . . . Go to Fairmont”. Coach Rock is a good person and will be a good coach. Todd Charske

Wow! This is what happens when one undermines the program for 9 yrs. to get ahead.

Bad move. Why would Fairmont hire internally when Fairmont has not been successful in a long time? The good ole boy network is in charge. The kids at Fairmont deserve better. New blood is needed. Fairmont’s defense hasn’t been any good for a long time now.
