T-M’s Thomas headed to Ashland; Dunbar’s Bass to Oakland
Trotwood-Madison’s DaWuan Thomas (Ashland University), Blake Cokes (UNC-Ashville), Kira Beckham (Tiffin), Kara McLemore (Cincinnati State) and Derricka Henry (Cincinnati State) all will sign national letters of intent to accept college athletic scholarships on Wednesday, April 14.
Dunbar’s Ryan Bass (Oakland) will do the same.
Wednesday is the first day of the regular signing period, and runs through May 19. The early signing period was Nov. 11-18.
All will play basketball except Beckham, who’ll join Tiffin’s track and field program.
Thomas flourished as a 6-foot-1 senior guard for the Rams (19-5). He averaged 18.6 points, 6.1 assists and 3.0 steals.
He also swept plenty of postseason honors, including the DDN Division I, GWOC North and District 15 players of the year, was first-team All-Southwest District and third-team All-Ohio.
“This is a great day for a special kid who really improved tremendously over the last two years and for the entire Trotwood basketball family,” said Rams coach Mark Baker in a release.
“In the last two years, five players have received basketball scholarships that total more than $500,000. This is more rewarding than winning.”
Ashland, a D-II program, was 13-15 last season.
Bass made the most of his only season at Dunbar after transferring from Chaminade Julienne. The 5-9 guard averaged 12 points and 3.0 assists and was especially effective in Dunbar’s D-II state tournament weekend.
In the state semifinal, Bass tallied 14 of his 16 points in the second half to spark the Wolverines to an incredible 69-62 defeat of Cleveland Benedictine. Dunbar trailed by 18 points in the first half.
He also hit 6 of 8 shots and was good for 13 points in a title-clinching 64-50 defeat of Port Clinton. Dunbar finished 25-3.
Oakland, located partly in Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills, Mich., was 26-9 last season and lost to Pitt in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
