Jefferson beats Newark Catholic to win D-IV state hoop title
COLUMBUS — Two for two; perfect. That’s the way we like it.
Jefferson defeated Newark Catholic 59-52 to win the Division IV boys state high school basketball championship on Saturday, March 27 at OSU’s Schottenstein Center.
Earlier, Dunbar defeated previously unbeaten Port Clinton 64-50 to win the D-II state title.
Junior Cody Ladimer was a do-everything beast for the Broncos, scoring 24 points. And he was at his best in the final eight minutes, powering underneath to score nine of the team’s first 10 fourth-quarter points.
He was sorely needed: Center Adreian Payne was benched since picking up his fourth personal foul with 1:04 left in the third quarter and Jefferson trailing by five. He finally returned with 3:00 left in the fourth but fouled out with :50.9 left and Jefferson up 56-51. Payne scored 11 points.
NC led 42-41 after three quarters.
NC went on a 17-5 run to take the lead after the Broncos opened a 29-23 lead to begin the third quarter.
The Broncos scored the last five points to cut their deficit from a game-high six.
Jefferson led 27-23 at halftime.
Latimer has provided plenty of inside game for the Broncos, scoring a team-leading 10 points to go with nine rebounds at the break. Adreian Payne added 6 points.
Jefferson’s biggest lead was 17-8 to start the second period after Joby Jackson’s 3-pointer.
NC (25-1) has slowed the pace of the game and it’s working. Senior Matt Dawson has hit two bombs and has eight second-period points.
Jefferson (16-10) led 14-8 after the first quarter.
If the Broncos are to win, it’ll be without a full-strength Payne. His right — shooting — shoulder is in a protective sleeve. Although able to shoot and run, the 6-10 Payne seems reluctant to jump. His long wingspan still presents problems for the much smaller Green Wave.
This is the third of four state title games where today.
Jefferson owns two state titles, winning in 1998 and ’79. The Broncos also were runners-up in 1987 and ’86 and a semifinalist in ’77.

Newark Catholic did a fantastic job under the coaching direction of Andrew Meister. For a team with no history of a state championship, Newark Catholic stood up very well to a team with many former championships. Great game Newark Catholic! You played like champions!

Well Dayton Jeff, if you had only won this clear of any major tarnishes, that would be a different thing! You had five games dis-qualified because you were caught violating the OHSAA rules. Well, you think you can do that and still be the champions? I think everyone knows who the champions were tonight!
