Jefferson beats Newark Catholic to win D-IV state hoop title
COLUMBUS — Two for two; perfect. That’s the way we like it.
Jefferson defeated Newark Catholic 59-52 to win the Division IV boys state high school basketball championship on Saturday, March 27 at OSU’s Schottenstein Center.
Earlier, Dunbar defeated previously unbeaten Port Clinton 64-50 to win the D-II state title.
Junior Cody Ladimer was a do-everything beast for the Broncos, scoring 24 points. And he was at his best in the final eight minutes, powering underneath to score nine of the team’s first 10 fourth-quarter points.
He was sorely needed: Center Adreian Payne was benched since picking up his fourth personal foul with 1:04 left in the third quarter and Jefferson trailing by five. He finally returned with 3:00 left in the fourth but fouled out with :50.9 left and Jefferson up 56-51. Payne scored 11 points.
NC led 42-41 after three quarters.
NC went on a 17-5 run to take the lead after the Broncos opened a 29-23 lead to begin the third quarter.
The Broncos scored the last five points to cut their deficit from a game-high six.
Jefferson led 27-23 at halftime.
Latimer has provided plenty of inside game for the Broncos, scoring a team-leading 10 points to go with nine rebounds at the break. Adreian Payne added 6 points.
Jefferson’s biggest lead was 17-8 to start the second period after Joby Jackson’s 3-pointer.
NC (25-1) has slowed the pace of the game and it’s working. Senior Matt Dawson has hit two bombs and has eight second-period points.
Jefferson (16-10) led 14-8 after the first quarter.
If the Broncos are to win, it’ll be without a full-strength Payne. His right — shooting — shoulder is in a protective sleeve. Although able to shoot and run, the 6-10 Payne seems reluctant to jump. His long wingspan still presents problems for the much smaller Green Wave.
This is the third of four state title games where today.
Jefferson owns two state titles, winning in 1998 and ’79. The Broncos also were runners-up in 1987 and ’86 and a semifinalist in ’77.

TweetDunbar beats Port Clinton 64-50 to win D-II state title
COLUMBUS — Geron Johnson scored a game-high 24 points and Dunbar finally pulled away late in the third quarter to defeat previously unbeaten Port Clinton 64-50 and win the boys state high school basketball Division II state championship on Saturday, March at OSU’s Schottenstein Center.
Ryan Bass added 13 points and Deon Stewart 10 for Dunbar.
It’s the fourth state title for the Wolverines, who also won crowns in 1987 (Class AAA) and consecutive D-II titles in 2006-07. Dunbar also was the state runner-up in 1971 (Class AAA) and ’84 (Class AAA).
It’s also the 18th boys state hoop title that Dayton teams have won throughout the history of Ohio boys hoop and the 23rd title to Montgomery County teams.
A championship car caravan/parade will start at 3 p.m. on Sunday, march 28, beginning at the Dayton Public Schools board of education on Ludlow Street and ending at the high school.
Port Clinton had waited a long time for this moment and captured the full-throated enthusiasm from seemingly its entire town, located at the base of Lake Erie. This season marked the first time the Redskins had ever won a regional title and also marked their first district championship since 1943.
A slick steal and flush from Johnson and another drive and scoop for a nifty layup by the senior seemed to spark Dunbar late in the third period.
Johnson has finally gotten untracked for the Wolverines after being held in relative check for the first three quarters. It’s no coincidence that the Wolves’ passing is much more sharp and they’re finishing far more often than the first half.
Delve Givens was on the receiving end of a perfect aley-op dunk pass from Johnson to end third-quarter scoring and lift Dunbar to a 42-37 lead after three quarters.
Dunbar can thank PC’s lead-handed touch at the foul line. It was just 1 of 9 in the second half at one point.
An 8-2 run enabled Dunbar to retake the lead from Port Clinton 40-37 late in the third quarter.
Transition buckets by Ryan Bass and Deon Stewart and dunks by Deontae Hawkins and Stewart sparked the Wolverines.
Dunbar has begun to hike up its hounding full-court defensive pressure and it’s paying off in transition buckets.
Derek Colston buried the third of his three treys at the buzzer to give Port Clinton a 27-26 lead at halftime. It was unbeaten PC’s only lead of the first half.
Nothing has come easy for either team. Far too many missed passes, shots and general sloppiness is the MO so far. Dunbar was tagged with 11 turnovers, many unforced.
Geron Johnson leads the seemingly frustrated Wolverines with 14 points and Ryan Bass has eight.
Colston paced PC with 13 points and Ryan Hicks was good for 10 in the first half.
Dunbar led 14-12 after the first quarter. Johnson and Bass each had four points to lead the Wolverines. Johnson’s first shot was a thunder a transition slam and Bass also threw down a crowd-pleasing hammer.
PC leaned on the long ball and Colston was best, knocking two down and scoring eight points in the first quarter. In all, PC hit 3 of 10 first-half bombs when not attacking underneath.
Dunbar (24-3) unloaded its full-court pressure defense midway through the period, but caused a couple turnovers, but otherwise PC (26-0) seemed unaffected.
PC’s Allen Tigner turned in the play of the game so far, swatting a Johnson transition layup to half court.
Lima Central Catholic 60, Orrville 57
Lima Central Catholic won the first of four boys state championships.
It is the first state title for the Thunderbirds (23-4) and snapped a tough-luck final four history for LCC and its coach, Bob Seggerson. Of its previous five losses here, all were by 1-2 points. And Seggerson also coached those teams. He’s compiled a 517-209 record in 32 seasons at the private school.
It’s the first boys state hoop title for any Lima team in the history of Ohio boys basketball.
“For Lima, the city, not to have a state champion is an aberration,” Seggerson said.
“And we’re proud to end that.”
Austin Stolly led the Thunderbirds with 16 points and Desi Kirkman added 15. Joey Bescanson and jacob Bolyard each tallied 14 points for the Red Riders.
Orrville (21-6) had won previous state titles in 1992, ‘95 and ‘96 and was guided by first-year coach Sly Slaughter, a starter on the ’92 title team.
“If you’ve been here five or six times,” said Slaughter of LCC, “you’ve got nothing to be ashamed of.”
The game drew 14,008 spectators.
On deck is Jefferson (16-10) seeking to bring another title to Montgomery County in the 5:15 p.m. D-IV title game vs. Newark Catholic (25-1).
Cincinnati Moeller (22-4) and Massillon Jackson (24-2) play for the D-I title in the 8:30 p.m. nightcap.
All of today’s finals can be seen live on Time Warner Cable Ch. 99.
