Jefferson defeats St. Peter Chanel; joins Dunbar in state finals
COLUMBUS — Jefferson had everything going its way and raced to a dominating 81-44 defeat of Bedford St. Peter Chanel in their boys state high school Division IV basketball semifinal on Thursday at OSU’s Schottenstein Center.
It’ll be Dunbar and Jefferson as heavy favorites to sweep state titles on Saturday.
Guards Juan Gay and Devin Foster paced a devastating display of uptempo offense, each going for 18 points to lead the Broncos. Adreian Payne and Cody Latimer took care of business down low, each adding 11 points apiece.
Payne, Jefferson’s 6-10 senior center who’s headed to Michigan State University, was fighting the flu and didn’t start for the Broncos. He made his first appearance with 3:50 left and Jefferson leading 10-8. He’s wearing a protective sleeve on his right shoulder that he’s had the last 10 games as result of separating the shoulder in a spirited Broncos practice.
Jefferson (16-10) advances to Saturday’s 5:15 p.m. D-IV state final vs. Newark Catholic (25-1). The Broncos will be joined by rival Dunbar (24-3), which will play Port Clinton (26-0) in Saturday’s D-II state final at 2 p.m.
Ironically, Jefferson owns a 74-72 late-season defeat of Dunbar.
Newark Catholic 48, Toledo Ottawa Hills 36
Newark Catholic threw a defensive blanket on Toledo Ottawa Hills, winning the first of four boys state high school basketball semifinals on Thursday.
The Green Wave (25-1) is making its first final four appearance and will meet the Jefferson/Bedford St. Peter Chanel winner in Saturday’s 5:15 p.m. Division IV state final.
No one could crack double digits in scoring for Hills (24-2), which shot just 34 percent (14 of 41) from the field, including 1 of 12 in 3-pointers. NC was little better, but hit 15 of 24 free throws for the difference.
Later today Division I cranks up with Cincinnati Moeller (21-4) vs. Mentor (23-3) at 5:15 p.m., followed by Massillon Jackson (23-2) vs. Gahanna Lincoln (26-0) at 8:30 p.m.
On TV
All four of Saturday’s state finals — but none of the semifinals — will be televised live on Time Warner Cable Ch. 99.
