Fairmont scores 2 fourth-quarter points, but survives

TROY — Fairmont’s girls basketball team had a seemingly comfortable 34-24 lead entering the fourth quarter in its Division I sectional final matchup against Springboro.

The Firebirds ended up escaping by the skin of their teeth.

Springboro, one of the area’s most improved teams throughout the season, outscored Fairmont 10-2 in the fourth quarter but fell 36-34 on Saturday, Feb. 27. Those two Fairmont points were scored by UD recruit Cassie Sant, who fouled out with 4:27 left in the game and the Firebirds up 36-29.

Springboro then got a 3-pointer from Katie Schubert with 3:37 left and a lay-up following a missed free throw by Jordan Trimarco with 1:17 left. That made it 36-34 Fairmont and completed Springboro’s 10-0 run, but the Panthers weren’t able to get closer.

Fairmont turned the ball over with 37 seconds left, but a Springboro charge with 7.7 seconds left negated that chance. Then, after a missed Fairmont free throw with 6.6 seconds left, Springboro was unable to get a good luck as the top-seeded Firebirds, also No. 1 in the DDN area Division I ratings, advanced to play in next Saturday’s district final at Harrison High School.

Sant led Fairmont with 13 points, and fellow all-Greater Western Ohio Conference first-teamer Olivia Schretzman scored 13 for Springboro.

After she left the game, Sant had ice taped to her right shoulder, which coach Tim Cogan said began hurting during a tangle with a Springboro player under a basket during the game.

Jefferson forfeits five games for using ineligible player

The Jefferson High School boys basketball team has been forced to forfeit five regular-season games for the use of an ineligible player, Principal Mattie White said Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Jefferson forfeited wins against Belmont (94-53, Dec. 8), Troy Christian (46-30, Dec. 12), Emmanuel Christian (71-40, Dec. 18), Lockland (99-57, Jan. 5) and Meadowdale (78-57, Jan. 9), White said.

White said the school consulted with the Ohio High School Athletic Association before the season about the eligibility of a transfer student and that the OHSAA told the school the player would be eligible. The association later told the school the player was ineligible after it received a call from another district asking it to investigate, White said.

White declined to name the player, saying the reasons for the transfer were personal.

“It was a change in custody because of some family challenges,” White said.

The forfeits drop Jefferson’s record to 9-10. The Broncos, ranked No. 1 in the DDN area Division IV ratings and No. 7 in the state, begin sectional tournament play against Troy Christian at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Troy High School.

Jefferson star, Michigan State recruit dislocates shoulder in major win

Adreian Payne, the Jefferson star center and Michigan State recruit, left the big-time game against Dunbar that pitted state-ranked teams in the third quarter with a dislocated shoulder.

But Cody Latimer, Devin Foster and other Broncos helped to pick up the slack.

As Payne watched from the bench after trainers tended to his shoulder, Latimer (playing for the first time in more than a month) and Foster each scored 17 points in Jefferson’s 74-72 win against Dunbar on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Dunbar (15-2), ranked No. 1 in the state in Division II, ripped off a 17-4 first-quarter lead, but Jefferson rallied for its first win against the Wolverines in more than three decades.

Jefferson (13-5), ranked No. 8 in the state in D-IV, got big help from the 6-10 Payne in that rally before he went out. Jefferson coach Art Winston said Payne dove for a ball earlier in the game and dislocated the shoulder on a third-quarter block, one of his five in the game (to go with eight points and seven rebounds).

“He was in great spirits,” Winston said. “He was like the rest of us, really getting into the game.”

Winston said Payne’s grandmother took him to the hospital after the game and he would know more about his availability and the severity of the injury after doctors examined him.

Wayne vs. Trotwood-Madison? Maybe in the postseason

No. 1 Wayne vs. No. 2 Trotwood-Madison in a great boys hoops showdown?

“It’s not going to happen,” said Warriors coach Travis Trice on Sunday.

The GWOC rivals both had an extra game to fill when a midseason trek to a one-game Bowling Green, Ky., event by both teams was canceled.

Fans from both schools thought it would be a no-brainer for the teams to play each other, especially since they weren’t ticketed to play during the regular season.

That was the easy part. Not so easy was deciding on the location and date.

Wayne wanted a neutral site and offered to play the game Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of this week at UD Arena. T-M just said no and instead extended an invite for the Warriors to visit Trotwood this past Saturday.

The only problem is Wayne already had a game scheduled vs. Centerville on Saturday.

Trotwood eventually filled its open date by luring Marshall on Feb. 20.

Complicating the possible Wayne/Trotwood matchup was Sunday’s seed meeting for the upcoming tournament. Wayne, especially, didn’t want to lose a sure No. 1 seed by losing to T-M. That’s why the Warriors wanted to play after Sunday’s meeting.

That was no secret, because Trice said just that two weeks ago to the DDN when the possibility of the game first surfaced. A game at Trotwood on the eve of the seed meeting was never going to happen.

Now, the teams will have to wait until the postseason to get it done.

Wayne (15-2) is the No. 1 seed in the D-I sectional and should blow through Piqua (0-16) and Belmont (1-15) in its first two games.

Trotwood (13-3) is the No. 2 seed and should have just as easy of a time taking out Miamisburg (3-13) and Fairborn (3-14) in its first two tourney games.

Should both teams also pass their district final tests, they eventually could meet in a regional final at UD Arena. However, to do that, both would have to get through the postseason hammer that often ends the D-I tourney trail for area teams: the Greater Cincinnati League’s best.

No presale for Sunday’s Marshall at Dunbar game

If you’re wanting to attend Sunday’s Marshall at Dunbar boys hoop game, plan on arriving early for a 3-banger.

No presale tickets will be sold. Instead, tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 3:30 p.m. The freshman will play at 4:30 p.m., reserves at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m.

Wolverines coach Pete Pullen expects a sellout … long before the varsity tipoff.

“That’s the plan,” he said.

Dunbar (14-1) won the first meeting at Marshall, 70-55. The Cougars (11-3) have won four straight since falling at Flyin’ to the Hoop.

Springfield lands girls hoop regionals

Springfield High School is in and Vandalia Butler is out as a girls postseason tournament site.

Vandalia’s Student Activities Center and its 4,000-plus seating capacity has been a fixture for the girls postseason, and often hosts the Divisions II, III and IV regionals. However, construction of a new high school on the same site at VB will begin after spring break.

Already in place at Butler are temporary trailers that will house faculty and students through the 2010-11 school year and possibly beyond. The SAC is one of the few facilities that will not undergo renovation or a complete rebuild. Even Butler’s stadium will be rebuilt.

That means a new location for those regionals formerly hosted by Vandalia had to be found. Hello Springfield and its new gymnasium, which opened during the 2008-09 school year and seats a capacity 2,100.

Vandalia will not host postseason games this season or next.

“That will be a little bit different,” said Alter coach Chris Hart, whose Knights drew the No. 1 seed in the Springboro sectional.

“We certainly haven’t played there, but that’ll be the case for all four teams.”

Notre Dame coach seeks out area star on signing day

On arguably the most important day for Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly since taking the job in South Bend, he’s seeking out one of the area’s top football talents.

Maneuvering through his first signing day as coach, Kelly found time to schedule a phone conversation with Wayne High School junior quarterback Braxton Miller today, Feb. 3, said Wayne coach Jay Minton. Miller is considered by many to be the state’s top recruit in the Class of 2011.

Miller was supposed to make contact with Kelly today as many of the country’s top programs continue to come after him.

Kelly is busy enough trying to impress Notre Dame fans and media with his first recruiting class as head coach, but that doesn’t mean he’s not looking toward the future. Miller seems to be on Kelly’s mind as a possibility for that future.

Trotwood’s Paschal taking (super) speed to Louisville

To put it plainly, Trotwood-Madison defensive back Jordon Paschal is fast.

“He’s like a heat-seeking missile,” said Trotwood football coach Maurice Douglass.

A member of the Rams’ consecutive state record-setting 1,600-meter relay teams, Paschal will take that significant speed to the University of Louisville football team, where he’s expected to sign his national letter of intent today. He’s one of four Trotwood players who will play for Division I colleges, including linebacker Willie Ballard (Buffalo), lineman Darion Delaney (Bowling Green) and tight end Justin Favors (Colorado).

Now that he’s already helped Trotwood advance to the Division II regional final and finished his football recruiting, Paschal can look forward to the track season, where he’s also made his mark.

In 2008, Paschal was part of the Trotwood 1,600-meter relay team that set a state record and won the title in a time of 3:13.46.

Last year, with two new members of the relay team, Trotwood broke its own state record and won the championship again, this time in 3:13.32. The 800-meter relay team, of which Paschal was a member, also made the state final and finished third.

“He has that closing speed,” Douglass said. “He’s a low 4.4 guy.”

Xenia’s versatile Anderson adds to area Ball State line

A tight end for much of his Xenia High School career, Dakota Anderson made a transition to playing more offensive line this season.

That caused a problem for coach Bob DeLong, who sometimes needed Anderson - like his teammate Michael Vollmer - to switch between positions in the same game. That required different jersey numbers.

Turns out that DeLong’s mother is crafty, and she created Velcro-on jerseys that the players could quickly put on or take off to change numbers during a game.

Not only that, but the 6-5 Anderson was one of the best punters in the area this season, and he’s also a member of the Buccaneers’ basketball team.

With that versatility, one could expect Anderson to find a way to contribute quickly to the Ball State football team, to which he’ll officially bind himself today by signing a letter of intent. Anderson is one of three local players, along with Coldwater quarterback Keith Wenning and Northmont defensive back Quintin Cooper, expected to sign with Ball State.

That means that BSU, despite the departure last year of coach Brady Hoke (a Kettering native) to San Diego State, is still collecting talent from the Miami Valley. The Cardinals’ roster includes seven players from the area: Tight end Ryan Hartke (St. Henry), safety Kyle Kuntz (Vandalia Butler), long snapper Cody Muhlenkamp (Coldwater), defensive tackle Jafe Pitcock (Piqua), defensive end Andrew Puthoff (St. Henry), defensive tackle Pete Rolf (Piqua) and linebacker Lorren Womack (Wayne).

Anderson, Wenning and Cooper will add to that line.

Alter’s Byers continues Knights line to Wisconsin

Cody Byers, the Alter High School safety, isn’t focusing solely on binding himself to the Wisconsin football team today. He’ll spend a majority of the school day on a senior retreat instead.

Then, Byers will sign his letter of intent and continue Alter’s line of Badgers recruits. The senior will give the Knights two consecutive years with a Wisconsin recruit, as he’ll join Chris Borland in Madison.

Wisconsin fans might be pleased to see Alter listed again among the team’s recruits. Well-known by now, Borland became a starter part way through his freshman season and was named the Big Ten’s freshman of the year after he finished fifth on the team with 54 tackles and collected five sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. He also caused five fumbles, recovered three and grabbed an interception.

Byers, at 6-3, was the tallest player on a Knights defense that was one of the best in recent area memory. That defense required versatility, so Byers learned to play in multiple places.

There could be even another Alter player in Madison. Knights coach Ed Domsitz said the Badgers have invited receiver Connor Cummins to be a “preferred walk-on” with the program, and Cummins is weighing his options.

Two other Alter players - running back Cody Taulbee (Brown) and offensive lineman Ryan Cronin (Dayton) - are expected to play in college after helping the Knights to two consecutive Division IV state championships.

The Knights have done it the same way they play games, without much drama. That’s how Borland remembers his recruiting process:

“I’m sure like a lot of guys here, my recruiting process was a lot more low-key with not as much publicity, but it worked out and I’m really glad it did.”

If Byers produces, Wisconsin fans might demand an Alter player each season.

Wayne’s Talbott ends drama, signs with Michigan

Terry Talbott, the Wayne High School defensive lineman rated as the area’s top senior recruit, signed his national letter of intent with Michigan this morning, ending a few weeks of indecision that followed a late visit to the University of North Carolina.

Talbott, rated No. 16 in the state by Rivals.com, committed to Michigan before his senior season along with brother Terrence, a cornerback.

Last month, he visited North Carolina and coach Butch Davis and began considering both schools. Wayne coach Jay Minton said he didn’t even know which Talbott would choose when he arrived at the school this morning for the 8 a.m. ceremony.

“Sure didn’t,” Minton said.

Minton then proceeded to the rest of his phone messages, many from reporters who were wondering what Talbott would do. Earlier in the week, Minton described what makes Talbott such a desired recruit.

“He’s very explosive,” Minton said. “That D-lineman position is one of the toughest to find, which got him a lot of interest. He has good size (6-3, 255) and good speed, so he has that combination.”

Talbott will have a chance to explain the reasons for his decision later today when the Greater Western Ohio Conference holds a ceremony for its signees.

Massive Fairmont tackles both heading to D-I scholarships

Fairmont coach Brian Blevins joked that the only real problem with his massive tackles who will both play Division I college football is that they were almost too tall.

“The tough thing was they’re both 6-4, and our quarterback was 5-11,” Blevins said of right tackle Jordan Erbes and left tackle Michael Shope. “It was tough for him to see over them sometimes.”

Varsity teammates since coaches elevated them from the JV squad during their freshman seasons, Erbes (6-4, 280, Eastern Michigan) and Shope (6-4, 270, Youngstown State) are expected to sign letters of intent to their respective college choices today, the first day allowed for senior football recruits.

They nearly remained teammates. Eastern Michigan also offered Shope a scholarship, and he gained some interest from Northwestern and Stanford because of his impressive academics, but Shope chose Youngstown State instead.

Blevins said that Youngstown State could make a stronger push into the area in coming years, with a young and energetic coaching staff. That staff includes Shane Montgomery, the former Miami University head coach, who is YSU’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“They were really key players for us,” Blevins said. “They led us to the playoffs as juniors, and they’re both outstanding players and outstanding students.”

Powerful Lebanon offense sends three to college programs

From 2007 until 2009, the Lebanon High School football offense improved from 13th in the GWOC at 255.1 yards per game (‘07) to first at 417.1 yards per game (‘09).

Several key components of that success will continue their careers at college programs, and another had the opportunity even though he chose a different path.

Today, receiver Chase Cochran (Ohio University) and lineman Elias Sayre (Kent State) are expected to sign letters of intent to play for Division I colleges. Cochran led the GWOC with 39 catches for 1,070 yards, and Sayre helped the Lebanon running game rank fourth in the conference at 215.2 rushing yards per game.

“He has a great ability to accelerate and go to catch passes,” Lebanon coach Shawn Lamb said of Cochran. “You’re not going to overthrow Chase.”

Trey Bonny, the Lebanon running back who gained 1,341 yards, is expected to play at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky., after closing his senior season with 677 yards in his final four games, Lamb said.

The league’s leading passer, quarterback Dusty Isaacs, gained some interest from recruiters after throwing for 2,019 yards and rushing for 521 last season. Lamb said Cincinnati and Minnesota showed interest in Isaacs, but he had already committed to play baseball for Georgia Tech as a pitcher with a fastball at better than 90 mph.

The recruiting interest is a nod to Lebanon’s offensive strength, which helped the Warriors finish 8-2 and 4-0 in the GWOC South. Now those players will get their chance at the next level.

Ohio State offers scholarship to Centerville lineman

Michael Bennett, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound Centerville High School junior offensive and defensive lineman, received a scholarship offer from Ohio State over the weekend, adding to his already hefty recruiting attention.

Centerville coach Ron Ullery said OSU extended the offer on Sunday, Jan. 31, and that Bennett already has offers from UAB, Ball State, Duke, Cincinnati, North Carolina State, Indiana, Wake Forest and Northwestern.

“I think it’ll keep on growing,” Ullery said. “He’s that impressive on film.”

Ullery said the colleges are recruiting Bennett as either an offensive or defensive lineman, because he’s athleticism is impressive in both spots.

“His explosion off the ball is pretty special,” Ullery said.

Area’s top recruit wavering on Michigan

Terry Talbott, the Wayne High School defensive lineman rated as the top area senior football recruit, is rethinking his commitment to Michigan and could instead sign with North Carolina on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Talbott had committed to Michigan in August, before his senior season, along with brother Terrence, a Wayne senior defensive back. The commitment was firm until just the past few weeks, when Terry took a visit to North Carolina and coach Butch Davis, said Wayne coach Jay Minton.

“His head is kind of spinning right now,” Minton said.

Minton said Talbott will likely sign a letter of intent on Wednesday, the first day allowed for senior football recruits. He’s just not sure which school will be on the letter.

Talbott is ranked the No. 16 recruit in Ohio by Rivals.com, tops in the area.

Other area players in the Rivals Ohio rankings are: Terrence Talbott at No. 47, Alter safety Cody Byers (Wisconsin) at No. 50, Northmont defensive back Quintin Cooper (Ball State) at No. 56, Wayne linebacker Josh Harrison (Wisconsin) at No. 57, Coldwater quarterback Keith Wenning (Ball State) at No. 58, Eaton offensive lineman Clint Shepherd (Cincinnati) at No. 65 and Trotwood-Madison defensive back Jordan Paschal (Louisville) at No. 72.
