Jefferson forfeits five games for using ineligible player
The Jefferson High School boys basketball team has been forced to forfeit five regular-season games for the use of an ineligible player, Principal Mattie White said Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Jefferson forfeited wins against Belmont (94-53, Dec. 8), Troy Christian (46-30, Dec. 12), Emmanuel Christian (71-40, Dec. 18), Lockland (99-57, Jan. 5) and Meadowdale (78-57, Jan. 9), White said.
White said the school consulted with the Ohio High School Athletic Association before the season about the eligibility of a transfer student and that the OHSAA told the school the player would be eligible. The association later told the school the player was ineligible after it received a call from another district asking it to investigate, White said.
White declined to name the player, saying the reasons for the transfer were personal.
“It was a change in custody because of some family challenges,” White said.
The forfeits drop Jefferson’s record to 9-10. The Broncos, ranked No. 1 in the DDN area Division IV ratings and No. 7 in the state, begin sectional tournament play against Troy Christian at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Troy High School.
