Jefferson star, Michigan State recruit dislocates shoulder in major win
Adreian Payne, the Jefferson star center and Michigan State recruit, left the big-time game against Dunbar that pitted state-ranked teams in the third quarter with a dislocated shoulder.
But Cody Latimer, Devin Foster and other Broncos helped to pick up the slack.
As Payne watched from the bench after trainers tended to his shoulder, Latimer (playing for the first time in more than a month) and Foster each scored 17 points in Jefferson’s 74-72 win against Dunbar on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Dunbar (15-2), ranked No. 1 in the state in Division II, ripped off a 17-4 first-quarter lead, but Jefferson rallied for its first win against the Wolverines in more than three decades.
Jefferson (13-5), ranked No. 8 in the state in D-IV, got big help from the 6-10 Payne in that rally before he went out. Jefferson coach Art Winston said Payne dove for a ball earlier in the game and dislocated the shoulder on a third-quarter block, one of his five in the game (to go with eight points and seven rebounds).
“He was in great spirits,” Winston said. “He was like the rest of us, really getting into the game.”
Winston said Payne’s grandmother took him to the hospital after the game and he would know more about his availability and the severity of the injury after doctors examined him.
