Springfield lands girls hoop regionals
Springfield High School is in and Vandalia Butler is out as a girls postseason tournament site.
Vandalia’s Student Activities Center and its 4,000-plus seating capacity has been a fixture for the girls postseason, and often hosts the Divisions II, III and IV regionals. However, construction of a new high school on the same site at VB will begin after spring break.
Already in place at Butler are temporary trailers that will house faculty and students through the 2010-11 school year and possibly beyond. The SAC is one of the few facilities that will not undergo renovation or a complete rebuild. Even Butler’s stadium will be rebuilt.
That means a new location for those regionals formerly hosted by Vandalia had to be found. Hello Springfield and its new gymnasium, which opened during the 2008-09 school year and seats a capacity 2,100.
Vandalia will not host postseason games this season or next.
“That will be a little bit different,” said Alter coach Chris Hart, whose Knights drew the No. 1 seed in the Springboro sectional.
“We certainly haven’t played there, but that’ll be the case for all four teams.”
