Fairmont in the middle of a brutal schedule

KETTERING — Heading into Week 6 and beginning play in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s Central Division, Fairmont might be wondering when it can catch a break.

Entering Friday’s games, Fairmont’s 10 opponents this season have a combined 33-17 record.

“The thing we hope is that it prepares us for the league,” said Fairmont coach Brian Blevins. “The five league games are pretty brutal, so it’s a Catch 22. We’re in arguably not only the toughest region in the state but in the nation, so you have to schedule up if you want to compete and be ready.”

First up in conference play for the Firebirds is Beavercreek, which is 4-1 and whose only loss came 13-10 in overtime against Fairborn. The Beavers rallied against Xenia last week and now await Fairmont.

Then, Fairmont (2-3) is lucky enough to get Wayne and Springfield at home before closing the season on the road against Northmont and Centerville.

Fairmont’s schedule, with current records included:

Archbishop Alter (5-0), 47-21 loss

Miamisburg (1-4), 53-6 win

Lakota West (4-1), 35-7 loss

Lebanon (4-1), 40-29 loss

at Butler (1-4), 43-27 win

at Beavercreek (4-1)

Wayne (3-2)

Springfield (4-1)

at Northmont (3-2)

at Centerville (4-1)

Fairmont has beaten two teams that have only won a game and Blevins is talking about how difficult the playoff region is going to be…maybe he should concentrate on beating someone with a winning record.

Blevins needs to find a new job in the lower divisional schools. Fairmont is way to big of a school to lose some of these games. They have the kids, but NO COACHING! Blevins no huddle offence is a joke!! what wrong with the huddle? The defence knows what going to be played next. I think blevins likes to be the “big dawg” whipping his arms back and forth on the sideline to call in the play.

Talk about your massive exaggeration, does Blevins believe what he spews “arguably the best conference in the nation” please…. Sounds like a coach trying to keep a job. Beat a team with a winning record why don’t ya….

I’m a Fairmont grad and to be honest, Blevins really doesn’t deserve the job at KFHS anymore. I mean for all my years at Fairmont, I’ve only seen Fairmont mostly beat teams with losing records. I’m not even sure the rivalry with Alter and Centerville is even a “rivalry” anymore since it’s pretty one sided. As for the “toughest conference in the nation” comment, Blevins is kidding himself. Sure I know the GWOC is tough….for public schools but very rarely do public schools compete real well against private schools. Fairmont would get slaughter in a conference with Colerain, St. X, Elder (to name a few SW Ohio powerhouses). I really hope Fairmont actually does put a team on the field that can compete against the Big Boys and not feast on the little ones….it would just be nice to see my old school do well for once.
