Douglass serving four-game suspension at Trotwood
TROTWOOD — Trotwood-Madison High School football coach Maurice Douglass is serving a four-game suspension imposed by the school district in response to comments he made to the Dayton Daily News following the Rams’ 21-19 loss to Wayne on Sept. 18.
Douglass missed Trotwood’s loss to Springfield on Friday, and he’ll also miss upcoming games against Piqua, Sidney and Troy.
Trotwood schools superintendent Lowell Draffen and high school principal Gerald Cox said Cox and athletic director Jim Ladd met with Douglass Thursday, Sept. 24, to impose the suspension.
“We’re trying to make sure Trotwood-Madison stays above the radar screen in terms of our conduct,” Draffen said. “We’re expecting our people to perform well. When they don’t, there are going to be consequences associated with that.”
Assistant coach Jeff Graham is coaching the team in Douglass’ absence, Cox said.
Douglass is serving his regular duties as an in-school suspension supervisor for Trotwood-Madison, but he’s not to have contact with the football program during his suspension, Draffen said. Douglass was also required to write a letter of apology to the officials involved, Wayne coach Jay Minton and the Greater Western Ohio Conference, he said.
Douglass criticized officials following the loss to Wayne, and said, in part, “That was the worst-officiated game. They took the game out of the kids’ hands.”
“There’s no need for that,” Draffen said of the criticism.
Trotwood is 2-3 following the 20-13 overtime loss to Springfield on Friday.

The suspension just gives Kool Mo D more to get out and recruit his team for next year.

Kinda late to take the high road after the way the administration acted during basketball season. Mr. Cox, do your staff a favor and try to lead by example, not “Do as I say; not what I do.”

Well, damn. Looks like the Trotwood administrators had a cojones transplant and almost did the right things. Show Mo the door would be best. How many schools district round the country would put up the crap he has gotten away with the last few years. And don’t say its a black-white thing. Classlessness has no color.

Trotwood sacrafices class for a chance at winning and they still struggle every year. There is a reason why teams like Troy, Piqua and Northmont beat them every year..hint its not the atheletes..its the coaching.

I live in the northmont area. Someone on this page would not know class if it bit them on the butt…I have know Mr. Ladd the atheletic director at trotwood for many years. A great person. If trotwood was a book, douglass would be it’s cover, he is in the public’s eye everyweek, so dont judge the book by it’s cover. Mr. Ladd is a class act.

Known Jim Ladd since he played college ball at Central State. Good man surrounded by inept administrators. Not an unusual situation at a lot of high schools. Trotwood just has more others.

No one sees what Maurice has done for so many kids. Could he use some leadership training….sure? Trotwood has been getting a terrible rap for years. Did anyone punish the Bolts coaches for asking Ram kids if they could buy crack from their daddies? or do you know who your daddy is? Schneider has been out to get Maurice since 1987, young men simply see Mo as a guy who is interested more in the kids than in his own legacy and record. Perhaps the OHHSAA, should appoint a mentor to help younger coaches who struggle. Maurice finds college opportunities for his kids every year, who would otherwise never have a chance at a collegiate education. I bet Woody never criticized an official.

I can name kids that centerville, northmont, and wayne has recruited from dayton. Trotwood won their division last year at 4-6 MR SAD. Therefore they had to beat Piqua and Troy. It’s always going to be a black and white thing. I coach youth sports and its the same thing. Touchdowns called back left and right.

Like I said before, unless you know coach Doug, you can onlly speak about what you see from the media. for so long trotwood has gotten a bad rap about everything that happens. I think back a few years ago, when a report was on one of the young men of the class of 06 partents being on drugs, everytime the northmont players got a chance they made a comment to him about his mom being on crack. At the end of the game there was a fight, and the headlines read”Trotwood Football fights agian” But no one check to see what the fight was about, our when my sons would be in a game and as the players got up they would call them a n* and stepped down on them, nothing was never done. You don’t see this sitting in the stands. And if you are white, your child might not come home and talk about it, but my son did, and he did not need Coach Doug to tell him that this kind of thing happens, he lived it. With all that said, I still support Coach Douglass, but I think it’s time for him to move on. He’s work at Trotwood Madison is complete.

I have seen games throughout the south with teams with every type of racial makeup I can honestly say that Trotwood-Madison has the closest to jim crow officiating I have ever seen and I have seen over forty years worth. The coach is not totally to blame here the body that governs the officals are.

Coach Douglass has his flaws as we all do. But whether most of these bloggers agrees with him or not is not really the issue. Most who are commenting are not nor have they ever been T-M fans or supporters. Most of these comments are comments on others’ comments. Not based on what they (didn’t)see occur in any of the games. Before Coach Douglass, we had 8 coaches in 13 years; 5 in the 6 years just before Coach Douglass took over. The program was mediocre and lackluster and no one objected to our teams then. Of course several of the schools in the area were busy raiding our rosters as well, which went unmentioned along with the taunts and other insults heaped on the kids and the school. All of the trivial and mean-spirited remarks and innuendos stated on these blogs have little or nothing to do with the real issue here. Outsiders taking pot shots because they can. Coach Douglass has turned the talent pool and T-M into an annual contender now…no longer a patsy, and that disrupts the status quo. Where is all the self-righteous indignation about coaching and staff misbehavior at the other area schools when they are printed in the paper? There needs to be a better way to work with T-M’s own to achieve the desired leadership other than trying Coach’s case in the local newspaper. That is not a positive strategy. It looks like posturing to appease those who actually are not stakeholders in T-M schools and athletics. The real issue is that Coach Douglass spoke up for what he sees as a series (and history) of bias and inequities against our athletes / athletics. He spoke up for our kids…now Trotwood fans and community, who will speak up for him? Administration needs to find a way to work with the coach instead of giving out demeaning punishments…either we return to glory or return to mediocrity. Who else has put in the time, effort, and dedication in season and out to improve the program and provide avenues for our kids to pursue a college opportunity? Who else do you think will do it? Where are they? Fans and community, voice your choice. This is our program. Stand up for something… or someone.

Mo did the crime now he’s doing his time. I’ve followed TM sports (football/basketball) since I graduated in 1997. We were known for basketball back then. But since Mo took over in 2003 we’ve made the playoffs two or three times! Great work Mo just keep yo mouth shut. They targeting you. Much love to the rams this season.
