Beautiful for Centerville; ugly for Miamisburg
Centerville made its first trip to Miamisburg’s historic Harmon Field a memorable one, crushing the Vikings, 69-0, in a Greater Western Ohio Conference mismatch on Friday night, Sept. 25.
Like a runaway train, the Elks barrelled through Miamisburg’s defense for 10 touchdowns and 579 yards — 570 on the ground — as they improved to 4-1, while the Vikings fell to 1-4.
“Our offensive and defensive lines just controlled every part of the line of scrimmage and made everything just so easy for us,” Centerville quarterback Zak Bertram said. “The offensive line was driving guys out of there and the defensive line was putting pressure on their quarterback. Our success tonight goes to the guys in the trenches.”
The Elks’ big, quick, physical offensive line — center Stuart Moss, guards Andrew Dickerson and Bobby Winter, and tackles Michael Bennett and Chris Duffy — was dominant, and Bertram and tailback Tristin Boykin appreciated the bruising blocks.
Boykin scored early TDs on runs of 5 and 11 yards, then the Elks blew the game wide open in the second quarter when Bertram unleashed TD runs of 54, 59 and 49 yards en route to a 42-0 halftime lead.
Bertram was 1 of 4 passing for 6 yards, but exploded for 204 yards on 11 carries before handing the quarterback reins to junior Chris Kuzma late in the first half.
“We tried to throw a couple passes and didn’t have much success,” Bertram said. “But our running game couldn’t be stopped. We just thought, if they’re not going to stop our running game, we’re not going to change anything. We just kept going at ‘em and kept attacking.”
Centerville punted on its opening possession, but Miamisburg tailback Danny Dotson fumbled on an inside run at the Vikings’ 31. Boykin’s 5-yard sweep around right end at 7:19 of the first quarter gave Centerville a 7-0 lead, and the Elks’ momentum never ceased.
Miamisburg hoped the slick, soggy turf would serve as an equalizer and slow the Elks down. No such luck.
“I think we had ‘em a little bit outmanned up front on both sides of the ball,” Elks coach Ron Ullery said. “The old cliche about the game’s won on both sides of the line is true. If you win the battle up front, that gives you a chance.”
