Trotwood-Madison won’t punish Douglass for post-game comments

TROTWOOD — Football coach Maurice Douglass won’t be punished by Trotwood-Madison High School for comments made to the Dayton Daily News criticizing officials following Trotwood’s 21-19 loss to Wayne on Friday, Sept. 18, but it’s unclear if sanctions could come from the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Athletic director Jim Ladd said Monday afternoon he had spoken to Douglass about the comments and and they are “moving forward.”

“Basically, my feeling is I wish he would’ve given himself an opportunity to cool down before he talked in the article,” Ladd said.

Douglass criticized the officials after spending nearly 30 minutes following the game talking to his players.

His comments included:

“That was the worst-officiated game. They took the game out of the kids’ hands,” said Douglass, after spending nearly 30 minutes in the locker room with his players. “They made a lot of calls because the guy on the other sideline, Jay Minton, has been coaching more than me and doesn’t look like me.”

Douglass is black, and Minton is white.

“That dude right there (pointing to an official) was on Jay Minton’s side and made that call — because Jay Minton said, ‘Make the call,’ ” Douglass said.
“Every time we did anything positive, they mysteriously came up with a flag. … The guy on our sideline … works in our building. He works in our district. We didn’t get a call all night even from him.”

Greater Western Ohio Conference commissioner Eric Spahr said Monday he had talked to “all parties involved” and addressed the issue. Spahr declined to specify whether the conference had punished Douglass.

“I’m not at liberty to discuss that,” Spahr said. “We did address it, we’ve talked to all parties involved, and the conference does not condone that type of behavior.”

In July 2008, the Ohio High School Athletic Association suspended Douglass for three weeks and placed the school’s football program on probation for two years after a seven-month investigation into recruiting and residency issues.

Ladd said Douglass has been committed to acting properly following the suspension and during the probationary period.

“He cares for his kids,” Ladd said. “His kids were hurting after the game, and he spoke what was on his heart.”

A spokesman for the OHSAA said the organization had not reviewed the comments but released a statement that said, “Any allegation by a coach of bias or favoritism from contest officials is something the OHSAA takes very seriously. The OHSAA will look into this matter further to determine if sanctions against Coach Douglass are warranted.”

Isn’t he the racist coach. Imagine what he is telling his players. He should go back to being a stripper.

This guy should be fired from coaching HS football. Trootwood lost the game due to a missed extra point. Also, I went to Wayne and besides the coach a lot of the team is black. This is getting ridiculus. I guess in this new era of change anything can be blamed on racism. People like trootwood’s coach create racism.

Anytime a rationale cannot be explained, the reasoning is always the color of one’s skin. Instead of using the color of skin to discriminate, why not use the texture of skin to discriminate. That way, the football coach’s complaint would sound more like, ‘The ref made those calls because my skin isn’t soft, smooth and supple as his!’ Oh shut up, you know it’s funny!

Coach Douglass spoke the truth. His experience enables him to understand and see reality alot clearer than you guys. Don’t worry about it simpleton’s you wouldn’t understand. Coach Douglass is not racist, just observant. You guys need something to do with your time. Please don’t make this a hate column because of a misunderstanding (on your part.)

Can’t stress enough what would happen if Minton or any white coach would say or even insinuate something like this. He would be suspended immediately and eventually fired and railroaded out of town. Let alone getting Jesse Jackson and Sharpton off their worthless asses and go after him.

Where did Douglass use the Race Card. DDN added that “Douglass is Black and Milton is White” Bull Crap. Please the first man that could do a better Job at Trotwood. The question is really why does the DDN hate Douglass. We should be proud of a Man like Douglass, any one else think that he was in that locker room inciting, these young men or maybe he was talking them down. Could you imagine what these young men would have done if he had gotten them perturbed, and vengeful. Think about your source before you respond. thank you Douglass for your faith and commitment to these young men… God Bless, one of your brothers from HBC.

Coach Douglas did not say I’m black,he’s white, the newspaper did. I have a young son who plays soccer and at the last game in Northmont the officials were making all kinds of calls against our team, but not against the other team when they did the same. It didn’t matter though because our team won.Adults need to be fair with the children/teenagers,if you make those calls on one team they should be made on the other when they do the same thing. Quit trying to make people believe they are better than others because the best team will win when the game is played fairly. And i might add, that same official was at my grandsons game making those same lame calls and the other team still didn’t win. Skill will always prevail, not cheating. ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL,SOME ARE JUST A LITTLE MORE TALENTED…KEEP DOING A GREAT JOB COACH DOUG…MUCH LOVE TO YOU AND THE TROTWOOD RAMS…

DDN is the problem who is making it a racial issue. Can’t you folks read? Coach Douglass did not mention color. And you all know its the truth , that some officials are not fair in their judgements. I’ve seen it myself. I believe coach Douglas who was a professional football player himself knows all about unfair officials. Trotwood has been targeted for years. It is time to stop the foolishness and let the kids play a decent game with all fairness! and let the best team win. To all you officials, it is time to do things right and fair. You are adults. act like it!

There was nothing in the article that implied a racially discriminatory act on the part of the officials. Coach Douglass implied that the seniority of the other coach could have been a factor in the way violations were caleed (or not) in the game. During the very first offensive series for T-M there appeared to have been an obvious pass interference that was not called; yet there were several questionable calls against T-M in the game thereafter. Many are tired of hearing T-M fans complain, but understand that T-M fans are tired of feeling that they still have to…

Mo is half right, it has to do with the coaches. Too many times coaches get calls because of who they are. Unfortunately, Mo is not a respected coach, not because he is black, but because his team tries to pick fights, he recruits players. Even though Wayne recruits too, they haven’t been caught. Douglass won’t get a call because of the way he’s running the program, not his skin color.

Someone mentioned it before - Douglass said, about Minton, “He doesn’t look like me.” What is that supposed to mean? It makes no sense - Wayne is a diverse school, program and coaching staff. Race has NOTHING to do with any calls. Heck, Douglass made it sound like he expected some calls because one of the refs worked in his building…so if one would have happened? Would Wayne have complained? No, because Jay Minton is a class act and a great role model.

First there was a flag thrown Ray. It was thrown at the snap. TW had a WR not set when the ball was snapped - illegal formation. Good call on the refs. Second Joe - Wayne was investigated and nothing was found. Wayne doesn’t need to recruit. We have a top-notch D1 program that gets noticed by D1 colleges. Kids want to come to play here, and we have a great coach to boot. Plain and simple - TW lost this game, because they made too many mistakes. They couldn’t stop the run game in the 2nd half, Defensive line jumped too many times, and the the returner slipped on his own to just name a few mistakes. Play with little or no mistakes you will win. TW didn’t do this plain and simple. Mo is just sad and needs to go. TW deserves a person to represent them respectfully - Mo is not it.

In general terms I’ve always thought the referees on the same sideline as the coach are influenced by the coach yelling at them all game. You see this in College games and Pro games also. It seems like the referee on the same sideline as the coach throws the flag against the other team the most. I doubt race was a factor. At least I hope not. I think this was a heat of the moment thing and should not be blown out of proportions. Let’s move on…

Maybe the officials should be investigated for a civil rights violation. It wouldn’t be the first time that officials were biased against an urban school, and called it because of their bias. I’d say it’s worth a look to make sure that the officials called the game fairly and properly.

James - there was no civil rights violations at this game. The call was a good call. Were you there? Go ahead and investigate, they’ll see that there was no bias except maybe the one that Mo implied should have been on his side since they worked in the same building. He obviously didn’t call the late hit on Miller on the side lines. Check out ABC’s highlights you’ll see that.

Sports Fan - Wayne is an open enrollment school. I know exactly the young men you speak of in Springfield. You can live in the other district and still attend Wayne. So don’t act like they are trying to hide anything. They followed the open enrollment policy and OHSAA policy. Try your argument again. Like I said earlier - when you have a good football program that gets notices by D1 colleges, people will come to your school. You don’t need to recruit. Wayne’s been investigated and nothing was found which Trotwood cannot claim. These young men at TW are excellent athletes and deserve to be recognized for their achievements unfortunately they have a coach that does nothing but put a black eye on their program and community.

I was at this game and unfortunately TW came up short, they played well and should be commended on their efforts. It does however appear, Douglass has a serious issue…. Mr. Minton would never have thought to say Mr. Douglass doesn’t look like him….he has no point of historical or even recent reference that institutionalized the way he is viewed, treated, mistreated, restricted, etc. Mr. Minton has no concept of such—-as well many of you don’t either—- because the way you look and the way he looks has not ever been a historical mindset of biases for the way this country receives you, and as such, plays a huge role in the way you live your life positively or negatively.

Wayne definitely has its recruiting issues. They just haven’t been caught. It is very hard for caucasians to understand not only the racial bias african-americans experience on a daily basis, couple that with political bias in this area and I would be upset too. Twood kids get a bad rap and so does Coach Doug. He truly cares and supports these kids through high school and beyond, I’m a witness. I think that it is funny that people are on this board calling Douglass a racist as if he is that because he felt his kids were treated wrong. It just shows you the long term bigotry of this city. What all of you need to do is read your history books and see the plite of black people, and then you may understand that psycologically the laws of the Nation automatically make african americans defensive. How soon we all forget that we were once a people considered as property, not people. Thank you Mo Douglass for standing up for your kids. Good luck next week.

I guess I should not be suprised that nothing is going to happen to coach Douglass as far as a suspension or disiplined in some way. This is the same Trotwood-Madison administration that did nothing to their basketball coach after he encouraged two player to fight in the locker room last year. I hope that the OHSAA does something to Douglass for his spoken outrage at the game officials.

Racism goes both ways Simble. Non-black people are tired of hearing that everything is about race when something doesn’t go your way. As long as there are people that continue to do this racism will always exist. We are all suppose to move on from the past, but clearly that is not going to happen. My ancestors never did own slaves of any color, why should I have to continue to be “punished” for those actions. I hope that one day we can all be better people and overcome this, but until actions like this stop we will not which is sad.

What a difference an administration can make. Thurgood Marshall AD makes a mistake and allows an ineligible player to play and reports it and takes the hit. A class act by a respectable program. This does not take away from an outstanding job that the Marshall kids have done. It does bring respect to their program. Now if that was the Trotwood program what kind of re-action would you get. It would be all about how the whites at OHSSA are out to get Trotwood. Poor, poor Trotwood, you are just such victims of society. Quit your crying and stand up and be respectable. Don’t teach your kids that can’t succeed because society is out to get them. What a terrible message this school is sending to their kids.

Quite possibly the worst play choice in the history of football. Why not give Graham a run/pass option? Ya’ll can sing the praises of Mo D all you want. I grew up with Maurice and his family and know them on a first name basis. (That’s about 44 years now.) I have known Maurice during good times and bad and know nobody who competes the way he does. However, when my father passed my first year of college, it was Maurice and his mother who attended the funeral; none of my other friends were there for us. (This gesture spoke to his character.) I don’t, nor does he, deny mistakes made in his life and he’s man enough to confess his faults and live with the consequences. The fact that some have read into his comments is sad, but to be expected when issues like this are discussed anonymously in an open/public forum like this. Plain and simple, you have extremely competitive programs mixed in an environment where race has been brought into the discussion. I wasn’t at the game, but I felt the need to assure anyone reading these posts that there is much more to appreciate about Maurice than gets recognized. Some have touted the number of D-1 recruits making it to the next level, where Maurice is celebrating the number of students continuing on to college after high school; he really is in it for the kids. Let’s face it, we all get a little extreme when it comes to competitive sports and sometimes things are said/done out of place, but we keep it in context. (Have you seen an OSU football fan talk passionately about HIS team?) Enough said…

Ok,TW coach spoke his mind, he could have been more tactful but he wasnt. I believe poor officiating was the problem. I laugh @ you Sprinfield fans who call these kids who transfered traders. These kids owe Springfield nothing, and its a parents job to make the best choices for their children. Maurice and Jay are good coaches. Everybody has up and downs in their careers! Springfield needs to replace their racist AD’S that their problem.

Cheaters never prosper! I feel Mo handled the situation professionally. I would have shot that clan member! But I feel let it go Mo you know the fact is play mistake free football from now on. Great coaching and just keep your mouth shut, I don’t see a team in D II that can stop that back! keep up the good work Mo!

LETS NOT 4GET TROTWOOD WAS ONCE AN ALL WHITE SCHOOL UNTIL WE TOOK IT OVER IN THE 90’s! And Mo was a part of the only trotwood team to reach the state championship! So you people are mad about this. Especially since we stay with talented athletes every year. When we beat Springfield. And Springfield turn around and blow out Wayne, what will you Wayne fans say then. I live in huber and its alot of bi racial marriages. So they cool with that in this area. Great coaching Mo, we made the playoffs for the first time in 20 years in 2003 but was Mo reaconized for that? How do you critics know Mo use to strip? Sounds pretty gay to me! When we win the state lets see if the state changes that game for us. Wayne is over-rated every year anyways. Can you say Cleveland Glenville. LOL

Wow Larry, those are some really intelligent responses. You seriously shed some light on this situation, and the current climate in Trotwood. Keep up the good work, Larry.

For a referee to have officiated in the Miami Valley for 30 years and note that complaints about inequities in officiating contests between black and white schools as a typical response is more typical than the writer realizes. He apparently was officiating even in the “good ‘ol days” before desegregation was being implemented. To not acknowledge there may ever have been any issues is a testimony as to why there still are issues today. calzed Trotwood-Wayne game are

okay, y’all need to quit with all these rude comments. HE IS A GOOD COACH. In that locker room he was not saying any kind of race comments. all coaches talk to their team a while after games. so stop sounding so ignorant. you don’t know anything about him, so quit making comments on someone you know nothing about.

Olivia I dont want to bust your bubble, but he told REPORTERS, after the game was over that his opponent, the Wayne football team got all the calls because the referees were white and Wayne’s coach is white. Please do us (and yourself) all a favor and get a clue before you speak. The dude is a racist.

Is ANYONE going to recognize that Coach Douglass was a former NFL PLAYER and he just might know something about football and should get respect for that alone. This is high-school football! You adult need to get a real concern and let go of your hatred for this good looking, exNFL PRO PLAYER, and winning football coach. I might be jealous too if I were in your shoes——fat, white, out of work, and feeling the need to win a game. Go drink a beer and dream of someone wanting to even imagine you as a stripper, then wake up and slap yourself for being out of touch with the world. Coach Douglass has a right to say what he feels. He was respectful.

Did he try to fight any coaches after the game? What an arrogant a*s. To think he can say whatever he wants just because he tried to play pro football. Grow up Mo.

Thats what I was thinking. What gives the guy to say what he feels, when his comments are racist comments? Does your logic, Nancy, give us all the right to say what we feel without consequences? So if Minton had said something along the lines of: “the black referees screwed us because TM’s coach is black” would you still say that Minton had the right to say what he feels? Of course you wouldnt, hypocrite.

As a high school coach who knows neither Minton or Douglass, you all are missing the point here. If Coach Douglass really felt there was bias in the game, there is a proper way to express these concerns. I’m sure the game was filmed and when you have concerns you may have the official assigner, the league officials and the OHSAA view the tape. To come out after a game and make comments about officials is just simply unprofessional.

There are proper ways to voice your concerns. I would never condone what douglass did but understand. It is really, really frustrating when you get call after call go against your kids. You can go to the offical assigner, the league or OHSAA and you will get nothing. If you actually coached and can say that you never once got a game taken over by officiating you were a lucky one. It happens, and it just tears your heart out for the young men who work so hard every week. Unprofessional for Coach Douglass? Yes. Will it happen again? Yes. It happens somewhere every friday night, a coach in an officials ear on the sideline all night. Sooner or later that coach will start getting calls and you have to stand one the other side of the field and keep you lip zipped. Apparently something that Coach Douglass find hard to do.
