MVTC’s Shaver, Gunderkline wins race walk JO national titles

The following is a report from Miami Valley Track Club president Vince Peters:

Erika Shaver from the Miami Valley School and Jacob Gunderkline from Yellow Springs scored first place finishes Wednesday in the USA track & Field Junior Olympic Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Competing at North Carolina A&T University Shaver won the Young Women’s 3,000m race walk in the fastest time of the day for the women - 15:24.62.

Jacob Gunderkline, the 2009 distance ace from Yellow Springs HS headed to Goshen College in Indiana on a Track & Field scholarship for race walking was the victor in the 3,000m race walk for young men 1 & 18 years old. His winning time was 14:55.67.

Gunderkline and Shaver both compete for the Miami Valley Track Club based in Yellow Springs. The Dayton area club dominated the national Junior Olympic scene with Reini Brickson (YS HS) taking 2nd in the young women’s race walk and John Randall, a senior at Beavercreek taking second in the young men’s race.

Mitchell Brickson, a junior at YS HS, was 4th in the Intermediate boys race walk with Sydney Beal from Beavercreek finishing 8th in the midget girls (11-12) division.

Shaver also placed 9th in the 2,000 meter steeplechase after leading going into the last lap. However a spill in the last water jump ended her hopes of being a double champion in the 2009 meet.
