FROM BELMONT H.S. TO BOWLING GREEEN
TO NFL CAREER THAT SPANNED 13 SEASONS
Martin Bayless reached the end zone once in his 13-year NFL career (1984-96) with the St. Louis Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.
The play was a 60-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter of a Redskins’ 21-19 loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 27, 1994.
But Bayless has scored a touchdown for youth every year since 1986.
A gift that keeps on giving, the Martin Bayless Free Football Camp takes place for the 24th straight year at Welcome Stadium on Sunday, June 7.
The 46-year-old Belmont High School and Bowling Green State University graduate, and fourth-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 1984, will offer more than just football instruction to players in grades 3 through 12. He’ll provide inspiration.
“Dayton is home for me and I have a lot of great memories of my childhood,” Bayless said. “My mom and dad always encouraged me to do positive things to help kids who were less fortunate — to try to give them some education on how they can change their lives.
“I was a little skinny guy who went to Bowling Green as a walk-on football player, and ended up living my dream. Kids need to be encouraged that if you keep working hard, persevere, believe in yourself and have a little luck, you can become a success in life and help your family. That’s what the camp is all about.”
Bayless conducts camps each year in San Diego, Phoenix, Kansas City, Buffalo and Dayton. More than 150,000 kids have participated, making it the largest and oldest free football camp in the country. And it all started in the Gem City in 1986.
“It’s just a blessing to be able to come back every year and help shed a positive light on my hometown,” he said.
