Marshall’s DeAngelo Gates signs with Sinclair after brilliant State performance

Thurgood Marshall High School’s DeAngelo Gates will begin his college basketball career close to home.

The 6-foot-1 senior forward signed a letter of intent with Sinclair Community College on Friday, May 8, becoming the first member of the Tartan Pride’s 2009-10 recruiting class.

Gates, who helped Marshall to the Division II State runner-up trophy, will be a combination point guard and shooting guard at Sinclair.

“I saw him play against Cincinnati Taft when (Cougars point guard) Juwan Staten was out, and Gates just took over,” Sinclair coach Jeff Price said. “I said, ‘Wow.’ Given the opportunity, this kid could be something special.”

Gates turned in a pair of “double-double” performances in the state tourney. He had 10 points and 15 rebounds in a 62-53 overtime victory over Circleville Logan Elm, then came back with 15 points and 10 boards in the Cougars’ 59-53 loss to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary for the championship.

Sinclair, which competes in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, hopes to build on its 20-10 record last season.

“DeAngelo is a smart player who is going to progress well,” Price said. “He doesn’t get frustrated. When a lot of the chaos is going on. He’s very calm on the floor. He’s going to be fun to coach the next two years.”
