UD recruit Staten to play for Oak Hill

MARSHALL AD: ‘YOU’VE GOT TO LOVE

SOMEBODY ENOUGH TO LET THEM GO’

Thurgood Marshall Athletic Direcctor Carolyn Woodley said today that Cougars star point guard Juwan Staten intends to transfer to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

“It is true. I just talked to his mom (Cecilia Hill) about 10 minutes ago,” said about noon. “She’s waiting for his dad (Billy) to call. They’re waiting to comment until they sign the documents. She has to give it the final OK.

“I have mixed feeling because of my relationship with him,” Woodley added. “It’s been a long relationship. I’ve known him all of his life and I truly love him as a person first, and even now that I’m talking to you about it, I’m starting to get emotional.

“Sometimes you’ve got to love somebody enough to let them go. You have to think in those terms. If I had my way, he would be here until he graduated and we would just continue to enjoy him.

“He came by my office when I came back to work on Monday (after hand surgery). He hadn’t seen me for a while, and I hadn’t seen him. He missed me and I missed him. He came in and he was just like he always is — a perfect gentleman.

“It’s going to be hard for me to let him go. But if it’s in their best interest — if he and his family feel it’s in their best interest — then I can’t stand in his way. I would want him to stay here with us and graduate from here. He always wanted to come to Colonel White (now Thurgood Marshall). He never wanted to go to another high school except Colonel White.

“But sometimes you’ve got to love ‘em enough to let ‘em go. Obviously, we’ll keep up with him, and wish his all the success in the world.”

ALERTStaten is already listed as point guard for Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.

The reason kids go to schools like Oak Hill Academy is to get exposure so they can get into a good college program. Is Juwan thinking about going somewhere other than UD? UD fans should be worried!

I think it is great move, now he will be ready to step right in at UD and contribute from day 1. He is now the most highly

MAC, there is nothing for UD to worry about, he will be a Flyer. I am sure we will here more from Mom and Dad later. ESPN here we come

Now Coach Ralph really has to coach. He still has enough talent to win the state in D3 if he can figure it out. The closer is gone.

Hey Doug its “hear not here” but at-least the remaining players will be able to show what they are really made of. Time to step up Shawn, Melvin, Greg, Adrian and the cast make a name for yourself.

Very selfish move. You were one game away from a stste title, you were the mvp of thee tournament rare for a losing team and you have most of yoyour palyers

Best of luck, Juwan! Show ‘em what D-Town ballers are like! And when you get back: Can’t wait to hear the Flyer Faithful ROAR when you and the Flyers take off!

One game away from state title should have given him incentive to stay[remember Daquean Cook stayed at Dunbar]

Congrats to Juwan. Great player, hope he wises up and sees that Dayton is not the school for him. I hope he realizes his potential to play with stars, and not a school who has never taken kids from Dayton Public Schools. Miami Redhawks have always taken the Dayton kids. They have been great students too. Tutu, Deron McGuire, Nate Peavy and the kid from Northmont, this year.

Phil Lumpkin, Darryl Dunlap, Ron Harper, Coach Ron Hunter. These men have accomplished way more than any UD grad. How come Derek Brown is not a Flyer Flunkie. Because he has smarts and will play in NBA.
