Done deal: Staten headed to Oak Hill Academy in the fall for his senior season
MOTHER SAYS JUWAN WILL
HONOR COMMITMENT TO
THE DAYTON FLYERS
It’s official — Thurgood Marshall High School junior Juwan Staten is transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., for his senior year.
Staten, who led Thurgood Marshall High School to the Division II title game of the 87th Boys State Basketball Tournament in March, will enter the prestigious Virginia school — widely known for its basketball success — in the fall of 2009.
He is expected to honor his oral commitment to the University of Dayton and become a member of the UD Flyers in 2010-11.
“We just finalized it within the hour,” Mrs. Cecilia Hill, Staten’s mother, told the Dayton Daily News. “We just contacted the (Oak Hill) coach to let him know that Juwan was coming.”
Staten scored 28 points in the state D-II championship game as the Cougars fell to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 59-53, in front of 11,160 spectators at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus on Saturday night, March 28.
Staten’s mother — who serves as Thurgood Marshall’s school secretary for students, faculty, staff and administrators — said it was a difficult decision for her son to leave Marshall, but the opportunity was too good to pass up.
“As a parent, as his mother, I’m going to have my little private moments regarding it because he’s going to be away,” Mrs. Hill said. “But academically, and even playing ball, I’m really excited for him, and it’s a blessing for that opportunity, for that door to open for him. I’m just elated, and honored, really.”
Is it difficult for Juwan to say goodbye to Marshall?
“Oh, wow, yes,” she said. “I asked Juwan, ‘How do you feel about it?’ He said, ‘Mom, it’s bittersweet. On one hand, it’s exciting. It’s thrilling to be going. But on the other hand, I’ll be leaving guys I’ve been playing with for years. And that is so hard.’
“He did feel like he had unfinished business here. And he was going for that unfinished business, trust me, until this opportunity came along. You just never know what’s going to come down your path.”
Mrs. Hill said her son will return to Dayton and honor his oral commitment to the UD Flyers.
“Absolutely. Absolutely,” she said. “I’m very confident ab out UD’s program, and excited. Juwan didn’t just verbally commit to UD. Our family verbally commited to UD.
“I respect UD and its coaches, the coaching staff and the facilities. We have their blessing on Juwan going to Oak Hill.”

He will get much more notice…might be hard to honor that committment. UD might want to keep this article to remind them of that committment.By jbe

It would really be good for UD program for a player like Staten to play there, but playing at “the mouth” is going to have much bigger programs looking at him. Plus he has to look out for what is good for him in the long haul.Juwan good luck and do what is best for you!
