It’s a jamboree

A third preseason football event has been granted by the OHSAA for this fall: a jamboree.

It’s essentially a fund-raiser for the state and host schools and differs from the two controlled scrimmages already allowed in that schools will be charged $250 to participate and spectators pay an entrance fee, also.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the OHSAA and its catastrophe accident insurance coverage.

Unlike controlled scrimmages and previews, jamborees are usually two game-like quarters.

Teams are not required to have three preseason events. Like previously, teams are limited to two scrimmages, and can participate in one jamboree from Friday, Aug. 14-Aug. 22.

“I think the coaches are excited that they will be able to provide their players with another tune-up prior to their first game,” OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross said in a statement. “By charging admission, it will also give our member schools another revenue source during these tough economic times.

“In addition, the revenues generated will assist in paying the annual insurance premium, which provides catastrophe accident coverage for member school students who are athletes, managers, trainers and cheerleaders within the entire interscholastic program. By approving the jamboree, our board of directors believes this is a win-win for everyone.”

In the 2010 preseason, a jamboree only will be permitted on the Friday or Saturday prior to the opening game.

Jamborees are well-established preseason events in many states, including Indiana.

The first of five acclimation days (shorts, shoes and helmet, no contact) is Monday, Aug. 3. Most teams will open their regular seasons on Thu.-Sat., Aug. 27-29.
