Wayne draws Princeton, Canton McKinley, Glenville in non-league football games

Two of the state’s best quarterbacks will be on display in Week 1 of the regular football season when Wayne plays Princeton in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown.

Wayne is led by junior standout Braxton Miller. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior-to-be should be healed after suffering a mid-season ankle injury that knocked him out in Week 6 last season.

Among the powers to offer Miller an athletic scholarship is Ohio State.

Princeton is led by Spencer Ware, a 5-11, 220-pound four-year starter who’ll be a senior this fall. He’s received offers from OSU, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Duke, Iowa, North Carolina, NC State, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Both are elusive runners, effective passers and heavily recruited.

The Wayne-Princeton date and site has not been announced. Last fall the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout featured eight games: two at Welcome Stadium and six at UC’s Nippert Stadium.

And that’s just a warmup for Wayne. In Week 2 the Warriors will play Canton McKinley at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium, site of the D-I state final. And for its final GWOC tuneup, Wayne will host Cleveland Glenville.

“(Glenville) can’t find anyone to play, so it should be a great gate for us and could be a big computer-points game if we win,” said Warriors coach Jay Minton at this week’s Wayne T&F Inv.

The regular season begins Thursday, Aug. 27.

Miller and Ware better enjoy being QBs now because when they get to college they will change positions. Ware is too small and Miller can’t stay healthy. Wayne is looking at 0-3 out of the gate which hurts the rest of the league. Way to go Minton. Genous.
