D-I Final: La Salle 42, Centerville 37

The Division I portion of the boys high school basketball state tournament will go on without the Centrville Elks this year.

The last D-I team standing from the Miami Valley just went down.

Danny McElroy scored 14 points — 10 in the second half — to lead Cincinnati La Salle to a 42-37 victory over the Elks in the D-I regional semifinal nightcap at Xavier University’s Cintas Center on Wednesday night.

Matt Kavanaugh led Centerville (21-4) with 14 points while Mike Griffin had 13.

Ryan Fleming had 11 points and point guard Jordon Crawford added 8 for the Lancers (23-2), who face Princeton (23-1) for the regional title on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cintas Center, home of the Xavier Musketeers.

The lead changed hands several times in the second half, but the Lancers delivered down the stretch for the mighty GCL.

Halftime: La Salle 17, Centerville 14

In a physical, low-scoring game, the Centerville Elks trailed Cincinnati La Salle, 17-14, at halftime in the Division I regional semifinal nightcap at Xavier University’s Cintas Center on Wednesday night.

Mike Griffin scored 10 of Centerville’s 14 points, while Matt Kavanaugh and Greg White had two points each.

All five La Salle starters scored with sophomore forward Ryan Fleming leading the Lancers with 5.

Centerville drew first blood on a Griffin layup off a Kavanaugh feed. La Salle scored the next 11 points for an 11-2 lead.

Griffin buried two 3-pointers to keep the Elks in the game.

Centerville outscored La Salle 9-2 the final 6:40 of the second quarter.

Princeton crushes Aiken, 78-65, in 1st of two Division I regional semifinals from XU’s Cintas Center

AIKEN’S SUPER SOPHOMORE

CHANE BEHANON NEARLY

SHUT OUT (2 POINTS, 1 BOARD)

The Princeton Vikings built a comfortable halftime lead and rolled to an easy 78-65 victory over Aiken in the first of two boys basketball Division I semifinals at Xavier University’s Cintas Center on Wednesday night, March 18.

Jordan Siebert (24) and Marquis Horne (23) combined for 47 points as the Vikings improved to 23-1. Orlando Williams added 11 points and Stefon Johnson 10.

Princeton advance to the regional final on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cintas Center, home of the Xavier Musketeers.

The Vikings will face the winner of Wednesday night’s second semifinal — Centerville or Cincinnati La Salle — for a berth in the state tournament.

Nick McCoy led Aiken (16-8) with 23 points while Darren Goodson added 19 and Gene Primus 12.

Princeton was never in danger after building a 45-32 halftime lead. The Vikes outscored Aiken the first three quarters (22-19, 23-13 and 17-16). The Falcons’ 17-16 advantage in the fourth was too little too late.

Both teams were outstanding from the floor. Princeton shot 51 percent (26-for-51), while Aiken shot 57.8 (26-for-45).

Princeton won the free-throw battle, 21-12.

The Vikes were poor from the foul line (21 of 37 for 56.8 percent), but the Falcons were worse (12 of 25 for 48 percent).

The biggest shock of the game was the poor performance turned in by Aiken’s Chane Behanon. The consensus No. 1 sophomore in the state scored just two points with one rebound in 26 minutes. He got schooled by the veteran Vikings.

OHSAA: Trotwood-Madison’s case is closed

OHSAA SAID REF DIDN’T VIOLATE

ANY RULES OR PROCEDURES

The Ohio High School Athletic Association had two words for Trotwood-Madison High School on Wednesday, March 18.

Case closed.

Trotwood-Madison wanted the OHSAA to acknowledge that referee Angelo Zolotas made a mistake by calling a foul with eight-tenths of a second remaining in the Rams’ 52-51 Division I district championship loss to Centerville at UD Arena on Saturday, March 14.

But the governing body of Ohio high school athletics refused that acknowledgment because the official did not violate any rules or procedures.

“If a rule was misinterpreted or an official’s procedure was misapplied, then that is something we would potentially acknowledge,” said Tim Stried, OHSAA’s director of information services. “But this (Trotwood’s complaint) doesn’t have anything to do with that. Several of us watched the video and it’s clear the official thought it was a foul, and that’s the end of the story. It’s over.”

OHSAA bylaws prohibit schools from protesting the outcome of games.

“It’s for this very reason,” Stried said. “If we allowed protests, gosh, we’d have a thousand protests a month from folks who said there was a missed call or a bad call. That’s why we don’t allow for protests. Officials’ decisions at the site are final.”

Trotwood principal Gerald Cox said he addressed his concerns in a letter to the OHSAA, and that he’ll comment after contacting the association.
