Lehman Catholic KOd by Summit, 48-45, in Division IV district championship
SUMMIT MOVES ON TO REGIONAL;
CAVALIERS’ SEASON ENDS AT 21-3
Cincinnati Summit Country Day is headed to the boys high school Division IV regional basketball tournament.
Lehman Catholic is headed home.
The Silver Knights pulled off the shocking upset, knocking out Lehman Catholic, 48-45, in the first of three D-IV district championship games at University of Dayton Arena on Friday night.
Summit will face the Wapakoneta district winner in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, March 17, at 8 p.m. at Kettering’s James S. Trent Arena.
The Cavaliers’ season ends with a 21-3 record.
The 14-9 Silver Knights caught fire at the right time — tournament time. And they burned Lehman with some heads-up play down the stretch.
Lehman’s Adam Freytag buried a 3-pointer from the top of the circle to tie the score, 42-42, with 3:34 to go, but Bradley Evans’ two free throws at 1:34 and Jack Gustafson’s layup at 0:54 gave Summit a 46-42 lead it wouldn’t lose.
The Cavaliers made things interesting down the stretch.
Kaleb Goins’ free throw at 34.5 and Freytag’s stick-back at 32.0 pulled Lehman within 46-45. Goins then stole Summit’s inbounds pass.
As the Cavaliers set their offense, Summit poked the ball away from Freytag and the Silver Knights’ Ryan Glass beat the buzzer with a layup for the final three-point spread.
Lehman learned a brutal lesson: Live by the 3. Die by the 3. The Cavaliers launched 15 treys. Two went in. They managed to convert 17 of 23 free throws.
Brian Adams led the Cavaliers with 13 points while Freytag added 9.
Evans and Khiry Hankins scored 15 and 10 points for the Silver Knights, who sank 5 of 17 treys.
The game was halted for several minutes late in the second quarter after a violent collision between Summit’s Ryan Horst and Lehman’s Corbin Peltier drew blood from both players.
While diving for a loose ball, Peltier’s head inadvertently hit Horst in the mouth, knocking out a tooth.
