GWOC signing day: When dreams come true

GWOC CELEBRATES

‘BAKER’S DOZEN’

HEADED TO COLLEGE

FOOTBALL BIG TIME

Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, is a day every kid dreams about.

It’s national signing day, when high school athletes sign national letters of intent with colleges.

Thirteen football players from the Greater Western Ohio Conference in suburban Dayton, Ohio, signed their national letters at a 1 p.m. news conference at the Huber Heights Athletic Foundation Center.

“The great, positive experiences they’re having today just puts an exclamation point on our league and what our league’s all about — when you have this many guys going Division I,” Wayne head football coach and athletic director Jay Minton said.

“It’s neat to see these guys come together,” Minton added. “They compete so hard throughout their careers for their own schools. And then to come together and now represent our league and each other. When they go off to college, now they’re taking not only their own schools and their own reputations with them, but the reputation of this league.

“This is a great way to meet a lot of great players. Everything is positive about this. There’s not one thing negative.”

I look at “The List” and see some good players. I’m not discounting their success but there are some other GWOC players that should be on “The List” as well. They just didn’t get the attention because of the school they play for or never got “ranked” by Scout or Rivals and didn’t have someone of influence to promote them. Then again, most of us know which GWOC teams and players get the recognition within the area, and in the media. The GWOC was a pretty competitive league this past season especially in the Central. Some players on “The List” were outperformed by their competitors, but that doesn’t seem to matter since they were already proclaimed to be the best by an online recruiting expert (once that happens you can have an average senior season and still get All-State honors). The reality is that Div I-A colleges only focus on certain GWOC schools for recruiting, unless you happen to get lucky and randomly end up on their radar. Congrats to “The List” and all the “other” talented players in the GWOC and area who will be accepting football scholarships in the next couple of weeks. Work hard and do not take it for granted.

I live in Florida, but graduated from Northmont and was delighted to see that CJ Barnett go to my alma mater Ohio State and join Kurt Coleman. I have been following the GWOC and it’s amazing the amount of talent that is in this league. I am sure that the competition will serve them well to compete on that next level. and of course… GO BUCKS!…lol
