Eagles play nation’s elite

CJ’s girls basketball team heads out west this week to play in the Nike Tournament of Champions that runs from Thursday, Dec. 18, through Monday in Chandler, Ariz.

The tournament has produced 10 of the last 12 USA Today national champions. This year’s field, which could be the strongest in the event’s 13-year history, includes 120 teams from 21 different states.

CJ plays Long Beach Poly in its opener on Thursday. Long Beach Poly entered the season ranked No. 4 in the nation by USA Today.

The Eagles improved to 4-1 Monday with a 48-47 defeat of Alter. It was the Knights’ first loss in 15 games dating to Jan. 12 last season when Carroll defeated Alter 47-41. Alter won its next 11 games to close out the 2007-08 season as the D-II state champion.
