Centerville 61, Northmont 37

Centerville turned a 24-23 halftime lead into a comfortable win with defense and depth in a high school boys basketball game on Friday, Dec. 12. The Elks opened the second half with a 10-0 run and outscored the Thunderbolts 21-9 in the quarter.

Stars of the game: Matt Kavanaugh and Adam Replogle took over inside in the second half. Kavanaugh finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Replogle, who came off the bench, scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half.

Turning point: The start of the second half couldn’t have gone much worse for Northmont. Zach Newsome, a 6-5 junior, hurt his elbow in a scramble for a loose ball just 14 seconds into the third quarter. That deflated the Thunderbolts a bit. And while Newsome was out, the Elks ripped off that 21-9 quarter.

What this means: Centerville is 2-0, but Elks’ coach Jim Staley would like to see more consistency — and a much quicker start — from his veteran team. Staley said he was disappointed with effort on defense and the inability to run some plays on offense. For Northmont, giving Centerville a run in the first half is something to build on. The T-Bolts have some perimeter players in Steve Newell, Kevin Tolle and Quintin Cooper.

Quote: “We played without a plan of attack tonight. We just played. We ran up and down the court. That showed. … We have not come out yet and played like a team that’s got this many kids back.” — Staley.

On deck: Centerville has a week to prepare for Fairmont on Dec. 19. Northmont plays Sidney on Tuesday, Beavercreek on Friday and Meadowdale on Saturday.

Watch number 10 for Northmont, Solomon White, he’s a freshman on varsity, he doesn’t start, but he doesn’t play JV either. He is going to be the man in this area, and real soon!!!! Remember the name!!!!
