Centerville-Graham: A Compelling Matchup

Centerville High School boys basketball team showed flashes of what lies ahead in its exhibition against Graham. The Elks boasts a powerful, depth-charged roster and utilized it in a 47-40 win over the Falcons.

The big winner was The Joe Kniceley Scholarship Fund and the Mandy Deppen Memorial Scholarship Fund. In an emotional pregame ceremony, the Kniceley family of Centerville and the Deppen family of St. Paris were recognized at mid-court. Over 1,400 fans attended the “Foundation” game. The Graham coaches wore black shirts emblazoned with Mandy’s favorite mantra: “Live as if you’ll die tomorrow. Dream as if you’ll live forever.” Mandy was tragically killed as a sophomore at Graham in 2006.

Star of the Game: 6-foot-10 Matt Kavanaugh was too much for the size-challenged Falcons, scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He clanged his free throws (1-for-7).

“I’ll be shooting 100 free throws a day starting Monday at practice,” Kavanaugh said.

Said Centerville coach Jim Staley: “We’re exact opposites. Graham is all perimeter and we’re all inside. It was definitely a game of contrasts. We defended the perimeter well and that is what won it for us. Graham shot 25 percent from the arc (5-for-22). Overall, it was a great dress rehearsal. We haven’t played well during the preseason, but we’re winning games. I can’t wait until we hit our stride.”

Talk about brawn. The Elks interior contingent averages over 300 pounds on the bench press (Kavanaugh, Greg White, Bill Reilich and Adam Replogle.

“They’re physical and they battle you,” said Graham coach Brook Cupps, whose team returns four starters from its Division II final four team. “Then, you add their length, which resulted in too many turnovers by us. We’ll see if we’re final four worthy. They (Centerville) are. Kavanaugh is a great finisher around the basket.”

On deck: Centerville hosts Butler Tuesday, Dec. 9.
