Dunbar 71, Meadowdale 68

Consider the City League Hoopfest a success … especially for Belmont, Thurgood Marshall and Dunbar. Those three team all won their high school boys basketball season openers in a tripleheader at the University of Dayton Arena on Friday, Dec. 5.

Dunbar closed out the Hoopfest with a high-energy, hang-on win in front of a spirited crowd that did a good job filling the lower arena.

Player of the game: Dunbar junior guard Geron Johnson led all scorers with 22 points. He made 11-of-14 free throws, including an 8-of-10 effort in the fourth quarter to help keep it a several possession game for the Lions.

Turning point: Meadowdale’s Richard Weaver scored to pull the Lions to 62-58 with 1:08 left in the game. Three seconds later, Meadowdale’s Marquece Simmons fouled Johnson to stop the clock, and then was whistled for a technical foul after a hard push. Johnson hit all four free throws for the 66-58 lead. The Lions never challenged again. (Meadowdale made it a three-point game with a 3-pointer at the buzzer).

Key run: The game was tied 47-47 entering the fourth quarter. Dunbar then ripped off a 10-2 run, capped by Patrick Green’s 3-pointer with 4:55 left in the game. Meadowdale pulled as close as three points (59-56, 2:35 left) but a few costly turnovers and being forced to foul hurt.

What it means: This early in the season? Not much, though a win over Meadowdale — which finished second in the City League last season — is a great way to start. For Meadowdale, a good pass here or a made layup could have made the difference in starting the season with a W. There’s plenty to work with as Ryne Drakes (14 points), Jontay Farmer (12 points) and Josh Lynch (11) all had good games.

Quote: “No. No. We are nowhere near (being the frontrunner). I think this league is going to be balanced. We’ve been fortunate the last few years. It’s going to be a dog fight. (Tonight) we just survived.” — Dunbar coach Pete Pullen
