Ridgeway students rock the annual Recycled Sculpture Contest

Ridgeway Elementary School students Gavin Sandlin, Drew Davidson and Zach Walters from Ridgeway took half of the six top honors from the 24th annual Recycled Sculpture Contest, sponsored by the Butler County Recycling and Solid Waste District at ceremony Oct. 27 at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton.
The countywide competition kicked off Oct. 20 with an exhibit of 20 sculptures on display at the Fitton Center. From Oct. 21 to Oct. 26, local government officials, community members and Fitton Center representatives judged the sculptures based on artistic expression and the creative use of trash, recycled and reusable materials.
In September, 419 local fourth and fifth grade students competed in sculpture contests at their schools. Each school district chose the top three sculptures from their school to compete at the countywide contest. Participating school districts include Talawanda (Kramer Elementary), Middletown (Miller Ridge Elementary), Ross (Morgan Elementary), Queen of Peace, Hamilton (Ridgeway Elementary) and St. Joseph Consolidated.
The District honored each of the finalists, their families, and teachers in the awards ceremony. Each student is provided with a photo of their sculpture and a t-shirt. The top six contest winners received two trophies, one for home and a traveling trophy to display at their school. In addition, the District awarded three of the top six winners with a $25 savings bond.
The top six winners were:
>> Taylor Underhill from Miller Ridge (“Rachel the Recycler”)
>> Alexandria Urbanek from St. Joseph (“Wire Whales”)
>> Gavin Sandlin from Ridgeway (“War Lord”)
>> Kaitlyn Smith from Kramer (“Old Nothings to Something New”)
>> Drew Davidson from Ridgeway (“Gene Simmons Bass King,” pictured above)
>> Zach Walters from Ridgeway (“Custom Hot Rod”)
