Local student wins Character Award from Cincinnati YMCA

Andrew Naab, St. Xavier High School student who lives in Hamilton, has been given the YMCA Character Award by the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati.

“On any given day there are stories of teens contributing in their own unique and positive way. The YMCA Character Awards were created to celebrate that compassion and leadership that is making a very meaningful impact,” said Rebecca Kelley, YMCA district vice president.

The award called Naab “a natural leader who believes heavily in giving back to his community, especially through the YMCA Youth in City Government.

Serving as a Youth Councilman, then being elected Youth Mayor in October 2009, and now Ohio Youth Governor, Andrew’s goal is to establish projects that will have continuity and a lasting effect on people’s lives.

He authored a bill for the Ohio Hi-Y Youth in Government program called, “The Mallory Bill,” which, in theory, would increase penalties for individuals driving under license suspensions due to accidents in which others are killed. He named the bill after his sister, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident.

The Bill was the only one to have passed unanimously in the Youth Legislation of Ohio and was then sent to the real Ohio Legislation. He has also traveled around the world and especially loved his visit to Antarctica.

He is actively involved in People to People Student Ambassadors, a program that helps students learn about other cultures by traveling to different countries.

Naab also volunteers with Young Life, the Big Brother’s program, and at Bobbie B. Fairfax School. The son of Hamilton City Councilman Tim Naab, he hopes to pursue a career in politics and is currently teaching swim lessons as a lifeguard at his local YMCA.
