“Our School” review on deadwood

A few weeks ago, I posted my review of Joanne Jacobs’ book “Our School” here at Get on the Bus. On Sunday, a shorter version of the review appeared in the Life section on page D8.

And my earlier critique stands. When public schools, like this charter school, are permitted to pick and choose—expelling students arbitrarily—then the public schools will be able to pick the students who will succeed regardless of environment and eliminate the challenging ones. When Ms. Jacobs is willing to accept ALL students on a first-come, first-served basis—and NEVER to expell any of them—then we can make a fair comparison of her abilities as an educator. As it stands, Marva Collins she ain’t. By a VERY long shot.
