Gibson still considering Dayton, mother says
Percy Gibson might still end up being a Dayton Flyer.
I just had a lengthy conversation with Sandy Gibson, the mother of Detroit Southeastern basketball star who asked to be released from his letter-of-intent Tuesday.
She said Dayton is still very much in the picture and Percy still wants to be recruited by new coach Archie Miller and his staff.
“We had a positive meeting (with Miller), but Percy didn’t know what he wanted to do,” Sandy Gibson said. “We thought it would be best if he had a clean page and could start fresh.
“We’re not closing the door on Dayton. That’s not what we’re doing. It’s, ‘Based on what he knows today, would he go to Dayton with this coach?’ Just out of fairness to him, I wanted to let him come to that decision.”
She said when she asked for a release from the letter-of-intent, she told the school not to disassociate itself from Percy.
She said her son has been through a traumatic couple of weeks with a loss in the Michigan state finals, the departure of coach Brian Gregory and then the exit of assistant Cornell Mann, who has a close relationship with the recruit.
“Dayton is still under consideration. … We’re at the pregnancy phase of this. Before committing to Dayton, we want to see what the other options are about and maybe get away from the stress and pressure of the whole thing,” she said.
“The decision may still be Dayton. But he has to commit to the new Dayton, not the old Dayton.”
Read more about Gibson and his decision in Thursday’s Dayton Daily News.

I am hoping you choose the Dayton Flyers as the team you want to play for. But, we have to move foward.Make your decision soon.Coach Miller needs to look at another player to fill your scholarship.Hope you choose the Flyers!

This makes a lot of sense. Big decision met with a big change - step back, review, and make decision again. Kudos all around.

Are you guys serious? These comments are ridiculous. This was ABSOLUTELY the right decision by Percy and his mother, and I am a DIEHARD UD fan. Gregory spent years recruiting him, and we expect him to sign on with Coach Miller after one meeting over a coffee? Let’s be real, this is the smart thing for this young man. WIN HIM BACK ARCHIE!!! We still want you Percy!

Sounds like the old girlfriend speech where she tells her boyfriend she wants to start dating other guys, but she still wants to see him occasionally. How often does she go back to the boyfriend ? Hardly ever.

Mrs. Gibson, if you happen to read these comments, the folks that don’t want your son to attend UD are easy to notice. They typically are Wright State, Xavier and Ohio State fans. Real UD fans would love to have your son attend UD. Good luck in making your choice. I think you are going about it in the right way.

This sounds like a very mature decision. I hope the family continues to see UD as a great university and a great place to play basketball.

John C.- for the record, could X use him? Sure, I wont say we wouldnt want him. However, We already have 3 top 100 recruits coming in so X will be just fine. That said, I think he is showing real maturity here in taking a step back and looking at the big picture. It shows a maturity that Staten totally lacked, and I’ll take this level headed mother over Billy Staten anyday. UD might be looking at a rough year, but they will rebound and be just fine.

he wants to be recruited by the new coach? What the hell does that mean? Look the kid already knows about the campus and college related stuff. Miller came up to “recruit” him over the weekend and told him all he can about his coaching philosophies. So what else is there? The kid is looking for something better and will take UD if there isn’t anything else. I’d dump his sorry self indulgent rear end today.

Whatever happened to the days when your word was your bond. Percy singed a letter of intent to play @ UD—yes Brian Gregory recruited Brian but are we supposed to release the entire team who also was recruited by Brian. Maybe we should just do away with all this and let people move from school to school on an annual basis. Hope this young man has more integrity than Statens father “Billy the quitter who….” who has class, its just 3rd class

No the school/facilities haven’t changed, but the the staff has. Kudos to Percy & his mom for wanting to take a step back, its a big decision. I have no doubt that if he comes to UD, he’ll get his minutes, but more importantly he’ll graduate as a better man then when he entered. UD will see him as a person not just a bb player.

3 things. …to Percy Gibson, a very, very mature decision by a young man. Your maturity is to be commended. … to Mrs. Gibson, a very, very great job of parenting…you are making the absolute right decision with your son. …to UD, a very, very good move. Best way to start off a new regime. Go Flyers.

I agree that this is a big decision for any young man. I hope that Percy will decide that Dayton is the place for him. I applaud the fact that he and his family want to take a step back and reevaluate. I also hope that they realize that the philosophy behind all UD athletics is still the same. UD is a wonderful place for an athlete to get a great education and a great sports experience.

This a very important decision for the young Mr. Gibson. He and his mother are absolutley doing the correct thing in re-evaluating his decision. We do not need another recruit second guessing his decision ala JS. I hope Percy chooses UD for what it is … a University that cares about its athletes and their education.

I sure don’t want Swampy Meadows “having a talk with Percy” nor do I “trust” him when he can’t post his comments once but has to post 3 times. Idiot, stay out of the discussion. I agree with the vast majority of the comments that Percy and his mother are taking the reasonable and prudent approach to step back and pause for a second look given the change in coaching staff. It’s a huge decision for an 18 year old and he does have to be “all in” to the new UD program. Good luck with your decision Percy and the Flyer Faithful will certainly welcome you in Dayton if that’s the school you select.

To coach Miller, stay on both these recruits, Its only common that players change their mind when a new system comes in and for the people making idiotic statements, there aren’t a lot of players left at this late stage as they all signed back in November. What we need is two guards to replace Staten and Spearman to go with Gibson and Henton.By the way checked with Atlanta papers and this is big news for Georgia Tech who has three scholarships to give for neext year and rumor is they would love to have Gibson.I realize coaches want their own people but it looks like UD erred by not retaining Cornell Mann the guy who really recruited both players.

Too bad Sandy Gibson isnt Juwan Statens parent. She seems to “get it” and saying all the right things. Makes me want Percy even more. If Buckets doesn’t want to come that is his choice but hopefully we can hang on to Percy. We havent had a decent post presence since Finn and Wally in 03. On a side note, with all these BCS offers for Juwan rolling in why are we not hearing of them? Oh thats right, Juwans dad is a trainwreck and a headache and his son thinks he is Chris Paul. Uh oh, i mentioned Billy Staten, Doug Harris is going to delete my post……..

It’s really not that hard to figure out. Bigger schools are giving him a look and if they offer he’s gone. If they don’t he comes back to Dayton and says he was coming here all along. It’s not rocket science folks.

The departure of BG gives Percy a chance to avoid several embarrassing matchups against fellow Michigan player Jalen Reynolds without looking like a coward. Last year the matchup against the future Muskie was a joke and with no support it could be too much to fathom.

No doubt that Mrs, Gibson is doing what’s best for her son by having him take a step back and re-evaluate things. This is a very important decision for the young man. I just hope that Archie stays in close touch with him to help him realize how much he is wanted. The team needs players with Gibson’s ability and maturity.

Wow - some of these comments are absolutely ridiculous. Gibson and Henton deserve the option of backing out and will recommit if Archie and the new guys can resell the school and the program. It’s tough that we have to “win twice” here - but it’s a new era and the bond w/ the coaches is bigger than the school. Let’s hope one of them or both are back in the fold!

Gimme a break! Commitments in college sports honorable? Coaches sign contracts, then cut and run as they please. There is no honor in these commitments. As soon as a coach gets an offer for $1 more at a new school, he’s out of there regardless of what his contract says. If these guys want to take some time to think it over, have at it!

Dayton is a dying city and no Dayton Flyer has made the NBA in over 20 years. If Gibson is any good, he will play on a bigger stage than UD. Ohio State has about 3 players drafted in the NBA every year. But of course, Percy would not be good enough to play in the Big 10.

Percy, STAY AWAY FROM UD!!! UD fans are very loyal to come out and support the team but if that particular star player is not on point they will dog you out. Look at how the UD fans started beittling Chris Wright, he was GOD to them as long as his game was helping them win but as soon as Chris started having some low scoring games the fans turned on him. Staton made the mistake by sticking to his word and going to UD. UD style of play destroy our talented young local players.Koodos to Percy and his mom :FIND ANOTHER SCHOOL AND koodos to Staton: you needed to leave there sorry asses. The question I have to all of you loyal UD fans: after these young men (perform for you guys) day in and day out how do you guys repay them in return after they graduate? Have any one hire or help them find employment? I most likely can answer that question my self: HELL NO!!!

Last night when my mom was braiding my hair, I thought man it sure would be great if I give coach matta a reach around. Here’s another thought, just for Percy: If you come to Dayton then you will never get any preferential treatment from me, my mouth, or my hands. Think about if Perc… I can swallow a whole Kielbasa sausage and pull it back out of my throat. Just ask Greg Oden.

No offense to the kid’s mother, she sounds like a stand-up woman, but I’m not going to put any stock in what a parent has to say about where her kid might decide playing. This recruit is gone, they just feel bad about cutting ties. Overall, they are doing the political thing, which is nice to see, but he’s not coming to UD.
