Gibson still considering Dayton, mother says
Percy Gibson might still end up being a Dayton Flyer.
I just had a lengthy conversation with Sandy Gibson, the mother of Detroit Southeastern basketball star who asked to be released from his letter-of-intent Tuesday.
She said Dayton is still very much in the picture and Percy still wants to be recruited by new coach Archie Miller and his staff.
“We had a positive meeting (with Miller), but Percy didn’t know what he wanted to do,” Sandy Gibson said. “We thought it would be best if he had a clean page and could start fresh.
“We’re not closing the door on Dayton. That’s not what we’re doing. It’s, ‘Based on what he knows today, would he go to Dayton with this coach?’ Just out of fairness to him, I wanted to let him come to that decision.”
She said when she asked for a release from the letter-of-intent, she told the school not to disassociate itself from Percy.
She said her son has been through a traumatic couple of weeks with a loss in the Michigan state finals, the departure of coach Brian Gregory and then the exit of assistant Cornell Mann, who has a close relationship with the recruit.
“Dayton is still under consideration. … We’re at the pregnancy phase of this. Before committing to Dayton, we want to see what the other options are about and maybe get away from the stress and pressure of the whole thing,” she said.
“The decision may still be Dayton. But he has to commit to the new Dayton, not the old Dayton.”
