Police find shooting suspect’s brother hiding in closet
Dayton police responded to a report of shots fired into an apartment building Wednesday night and ended up playing a game of “Who’s Who” with three men named A. Johnson.
It started when a resident at 211 Ernst Ave. reported being shot at by a man outside. He said a man he knows only as “Austin” banged on the front door of the apartment building and when the resident answered, “Austin” demanded $80 he was owed. When the resident said he didn’t have the money and tried to go back inside he heard one shot fired from outside, according to the police report.
Officers recovered a bullet that had traveled through the front window of the lobby and into the bathroom of a first floor apartment.
The resident said he thought “Austin” stayed two doors down with his brother.
Upon arriving at the brother’s address, police were let in a by a female. They explained why they were there and she said they could look around.
A man named Aaron Johnson was in the apartment and initially refused to give his name or cooperate with officers. It is unknown if he is related to “Austin”. The female claimed there was no one else in the apartment.
But when an officer opened a closet, she found a male hiding on the top shelf covered with clothing. He was identified as Austin’s brother Avery Johnson, 26.
He said his brother had been there but left before officers arrived. He admitted that he hid because he had a probation violation warrant.
Before leaving, officers spotted a gun underneath a heating vent cover.
Avery Johnson was taken into custody for probation violation and for having a weapon as a felon.
Austin Johnson was not located, but faces a possible felony charge of improperly discharging a firearm.
