Man arrested at library after making false bomb threat
A man carrying a briefcase at the Dayton Metro Library downtown was questioned by police Thursday after several library patrons reported hearing him make bomb threats on the phone.
When Dayton Police officers arrived at about 3:40 p.m. they found the 54-year-old man sitting on the floor of the library with the briefcase next to him. He said there was nothing but paperwork in the case and denied ever saying anything about a bomb.
But a woman told police that he had called her and threatened to blow up the Gateway Shelter on South Gettysburg Avenue. He allegedly said he had “lost his mind and did not know what was real”, according to a police report. He said he would use an AK-47 rifle to shoot everyone that didn’t die in the explosion and then turn the gun on himself, the report said.
Police asked the library security officer to evacuate the building as a precaution.
His briefcase was examined and found to contain no explosive device. He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital for a mental evaluation. He was issued a summons for a possible inducing panic charge.
