Road to friendship
Over the weekend I drove through the city of Harrison on my way to a ladies-only party with high school friends at a campsite along the Whitewater River. The beautiful day proved perfect for a leisurely drive through Ross, passing farm stands and Stricker’s Grove.
From Ohio 128 I turned onto Willey Road and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of this farmland. From Willey I turned onto Atherton Road and then onto Oxford Road and then onto New Haven Road, where traffic picked up on its way to I-74 and Harrison.
Traffic always backs up as you cross the I-74 overpass and enter Harrison proper. How do the residents tolerate all the delays on this 2-lane road that needs to be at least 4 lanes? With the expanded business development and new-home construction in the area, I bet daily commuters here express a lot of road rage. Or maybe, they are learning new ways of patience!
On my way to the camp party, I needed to detour because of sewer work on Campbell Road off Kilby. I drove instead through downtown Harrison, which exudes small-town charm and a feeling of things intimate. Some storefronts along Harrison Avenue and Stateline Road are empty or dilapidated, but there is also evidence of some businesses that are thriving. I spotted a small café that I want to try for Sunday brunch.
Stateline Road is busy, too, taking folks to West Harrison and Bright, Indiana, and other points west. Once over the bridge on Stateline Road, I turned onto N. Dearborn Road and entered Whitewater private camp areas. I was shocked at how much erosion there has been to the banks of the camp where I partied. I recalled much more shore from decades ago.
It’s always fun to explore familiar places after a long absence. The only thing better is reuniting with dear friends!
