What Are You Watching? - Vol. 7

Seven may be a lucky number, but since I’m still catching up with Ken Burns’ The War and have been very busy writing Middfest stories, I haven’t been lucky enough to catch up with many movies this week. But I did manage to sneak a few in.

Across the Universe: I was so anxious to see this musical with a Beatles score I went to Columbus last weekend to catch it. I’ll write a full review next week when the film opens in the Dayton/Cincinnati area, but for now, let me say it’s a glorious mess.

Body Double: It had been quite a while since I saw Brian De Palma’s deliriously trashy combination of Rear Window with an inside look at the porno industry. The movie relies a little too heavily on the stupidity of its lead character to move the plot forward, but there are some bravura suspense scenes. And is it a back-handed compliment to say that Melanie Griffith is quite convincing as a porn actress? GRADE: B

The Kingdom: Review back here. GRADE: A-

Superman and the Mole Men: This was sort of the pilot of the Superman TV series with George Reeves. It’s fun to watch from a historical standpoint, but as a film, it’s like a cross between a Superman comic and a Mystery Science Theatre 3000-type movie. Still, it’s better than Superman III or IV. As a curio: B/As a movie: C

So what’s on your TV? Or have you seen anything in theaters lately? If you haven’t seen anything, tell me what’s on your to-see list?

“deliriously trashy”: that may be the best way to describe Body Double. I cannot remember a film that plays as well on the viewer’s lurid fascination like this one does.
