If Harry Potter dies, what about the movies?
Relax, Potterphiles, I have no inside dope on whether everyone’s favorite boy wizard meets his maker in the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, due out July 21. But I have to wonder …
If he does die, how will that affect the movies?
Oh, you can go on and on about how you just won’t read the books, but believe you me, a death that Hogwarts-shattering WILL get out. I’ve only read the books up through Azkaban, but thanks to careless souls who assume everyone reads the books, I found out about fateful plot points in Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince without even trying.
If Harry does perish, and you happen to find out about it, how will that affect enjoyment of the movies for you? Won’t they be downers with the knowledge it all ends badly?
And what about that Harry Potter land Universal in Orlando will debut in 2009? Would going there somehow be less fun if we knew a dire fate was ahead for Harry? Seems to me such a tragedy might be bad for business. As this Reuters story states, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes, only to bring him back. Ian Fleming tried to do the same to James Bond, and we can see how well that went over.
So my guess is that Harry will be OK, although he’ll certainly be put through the wringer. Or am I totally misjudging this whole thing because I’m not up on my Rowling?
You tell me. All I can say for sure is that if Harry dies, it won’t only be the kids who need consoling.
One favor: If you must reveal details about the upcoming books, please put SPOILER warnings in there so as not to spoil the fun (or tragedy) for those of us who haven’t read as far as you have.

She has said that she always intended to kill harry and in the books leading up to it you see that when one is hurt the other is too. The way I see it, to kill one you have to kill the otherBy Tony

SPOILER WARNING! In the sixth book, Harry learns from Dumbledore that Voldemort has broken his soul into 7 pieces (or Horcruxes) and the only way he can be destroyed is if all 7 pieces are destroyed, the final piece being Voldemort himself. My thought is that Harry himself is a Horcrux and was made so when the killing curse failed to kill him as a baby. This will mean that Harry will have to die in order to kill Voldemort.By Kim S.

!! SPOILER WARNING !! I was thinking about the prophecy too. One of the reasons that Potter’s books work for me is because of the symbiosis b/t Voldemort and Potter. Another scenario that I thought possible is that either Ron or Hermoine perishes (you can’t say ‘dies’ in something that’s this much of a saga) or that Harry has to give up his magical powers i.e. metaphorically ‘perish’ in order to defeat Voldemort once and for all. I really hope it’s not just a simple case of Harry finally besting Voldemort - I’d be pretty angry if that was the case. It’d be far too cliche in a series of books that has tried very hard not to give the bow. But I’m just worried about the books - I couldn’t care less about the films. I may not have even seen the last one and I fell asleep on the one before. It would be career suicide for Rowling to kill off Potter though - you never know if the story could go on.By ME

I haven’t read one of the books yet because I started with the movies and don’t want to spoil those. We’ve watch Harry grow up and become attached to Daniel Ratliff as Potter. So if he dies, it will painful just like it would have been painful for me if Frodo would have died. Would I accept it if that’s what happens I’m not sure - all depends on how they play it out. I don’t think its wise not to put Harry on top. He is the good wizard and good should trump evil right? That’s what we all NEED in the end to feel good when we leave the theater? At least I do. Call me a Disney raised sap, but I hate being painfully disappointed when the person I’m rooting for dies. I’m holding my breath, and anticipating the movies praying for the art and beauty along with the crafty lines of all the first four combined! My money is on Harry!!By Allie D

!!!BOOK SPOILER WARNING!!! For those who have not read up through Order of the Phoenix, there is basically a prophecy that states that when it comes to Harry and Voldemort, one cannot live while the other one survives. So basically, Harry is either going to kill Voldemore or be killed BY him. At least, that is what is so far believed. Of course, I have only just started Half-Blood Prince. Will Harry die? I have my money on one of the three dying, and it will probably be Harry. But I think he will go down a hero. Rowling wouldn’t kill him off unless he were taking Voldemort with him. Potter is a tortured soul in the latter part of the series, much like Frodo Baggins. I honestly think if he does survive this ordeal, he will not live happily ever after. Therefore, if he were to die, I don’t think I would be to bummed about the movies. Now for younger audience members? That remains to be seen…
