Reds agree on terms with closer Madson

It looks as if the Cincinnati Reds have said good-bye to Coco Cordero and hello to Ryan Madson, according to several reports.

Madson becomes the Reds’ closer, replacing free agent Cordero, who could not come to an agreement to re-up with the Reds.

Madson, though, is more than an adequate replacement and is the third pitcher the Reds have added in the offseason.

GM Walt Jocketty earlier made trades for starter Matt Latos and set-up man Sean Marshall.

THE REDS HAVE not confirmed the deal because it isn’t done yet, not until Madson passes a physical. But here is the Associated Press report on the deal.

Madson and the Reds reached an oral agreement on an $8.5 million one-year contract.

Madson saved 32 games in 34 chances last year for the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies.

The contract is subject to a written agreement.

Madson replaces Francisco Cordero as the closer in Cincinnati while Cordero remains a free agent after the Reds declined a $12 million option, choosing instead to pay him a $1 million buyout.

Madson nearly re-signed with the Phillies, but a four-year $44 million deal collapsed in November and the Phillies later reached a $50 million, four-year contract deal with closer Jonathan Papelbon.

In 491 career games, including 18 starts, Madson is 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA with 52 saves.

After years of success as a set-up guy, he took over for injured Brad Lidge as Philadelphia’s closer last year and went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 62 games with a 3.59 ERA in 62 games. The lanky Madson allowed only two home runs and 16 walks in 60 2/3 innings.

Madson is coming off a three-year deal with the Phillies that guaranteed him $12 million and he earned $5.1 million last year, including a $600,000 bonus for games finished.

The Reds will win the division with the new pitching staff. I will miss the 2 for 1 price with the Coco Cordero 9th inning game gone, but my cardiologist won’t.

In the line of a Conspiracy Theory, what is to stop a team posting a ridiculous $51M to a Japanese team with the idea that you are going low ball the contract offer? The player goes back to Japan, you get your $51M back and most importantly, YOUR RIVALS DO NOT GET A CHANCE TO SIGN HIM.

Hey All, I like the deal: Coco was a freaken heartattack waiting to happen, at least for me, ha! As far as the rest of the moves, I’m glad that we’re heading in the right direction. However, I still have concerns w/r to a LF that will produce, a SS that will stay healthy, and a replacement for Rolen…but,I am looking forward to an improved record…the last thing that I think we need, is for Dusty to go…Never been happy with him, his ways of managing, nor his decisions; but would love for him to prove me wrong. Go Reds!

Want to say a few things please, and the I?m off here. Barry Larkin & Bret & Aaron Boone were some of the smoothest players to watch on our infield, along with Hal Morris, & Casey at 1st, and Sabo manning third, those were the days of happier times. Larkin NEVER complained, just led by example for 19 yrs! Love you Barry you deserve all the accolades you are getting right now! Now, I complained that Walt was sitting on his hands, but I?m ready to retract my statement after what has happened in the last 3 weeks! We signed Mat Latos(Gave alot to get a future Ace,yes I said ACE gom), then rented Sean Marshall(LH awesome stats that will make more sense if we can get an extension for the players we gave up) to make a run at the div. title, tonight we signed Ryan Madson to be our closer for possibly longer if we win the div. this yr! All we need now is RH bat to help Votto & JB & we will be a GREAT club! Strongest bullpen in our div, startin rotation stronger, say bye Arroyo n get Roy O on our club!GO REDS

The Reds won’t need a closer in 2012 because they will always be behind come the 9th inning.

one year deal because his agent got greedy and blew the 4 year deal with the Phillies. A decent 1 year contract allows him to test the market again next year. Smart move by the Reds since they get a player playing for big contract. But, it’s more apparent than ever the Reds are positioning for an all or nothing push next year. Now, where’s the 3rd baseman and LF needed to finish the job? Won’t miss Coco at all and wonder if Coco will land a decent contract.

Hal, I seem to remember a column you wrote last summer in which your reaction to Coco was “I have enough — enough of the walks, the wildness, etc..” I would be glad to have Coco at a reasonable price, but it appears that Bean Stringfellow overplayed his hand. Madson is a big upgrade at a discount price.

Good news. Walt has the Reds in win mode. Give Heisey a real chance in left field and we’re ready for spring training.

Good move. Pitching staff will hopefully be solid now. Now time to find a left fielder.

The one-year deal (Fay is reporting that there’s an option in there, no word on who holds the option) limits the risk for the Reds if Madson doesn’t pan out and allows the pitcher to test the waters again next year, which was likely a big deal to him and his agent. Madson was looking for a deal similar to the one his replacement (Papelbon) got in Philly. Most of the money is spent at this point, so the man needed to make sure he was at least pitching somewhere next year so he can play for a bigger contract next go-round. And, of course, I can’t wait until Madson gives up his second hit of the season and the fans are up in arms how Walt failed, it was a bad sign, shoulda kept Coco, fire Dusty, etc.

One year because they want to see how it works. If goes well, I would imagine they will attempt to re-sign. If the season does not go well, one year deals mean they are easier to trade. Certainly going all in for 2012.

I like this signing but why only a one year deal? I don’t like the idea of replacing Marshall and Madson in one year. Still, the Reds appear to be poised to compete in 2012. Now to sign BP.
