Wake-up calls for Bronson and E.E.
“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”
One of the great lines in a great movie, Animal House, which obviously at least one of our posters didn’t see or know about when he corrected RC about who bombed Pearl Harbor.
Anyway, no matter who bombed Pearl Harbor, the Cincinnati Reds keep twisting on the end of a rope but keep kicking, screaming and breathing.
Just when it looks as if all is over, Bronson Arroyo (The Human Yo-Yo) throws 16 consecutive scoreless innings in two straight wins - including seven innings Friday in a 4-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
And what does he say when asked the difference between now and, say, when he is giving up double-digit runs in one or a few innings in Toronto? “Luck,” he said with a giggle. “Just call me a roller coaster.”
Then there is Edwin Encarnacion, the man we all want to dump (blush, blush from these fingers). I’ve been wanting to trade him for three years. With several scouts at the park Friday, maybe now is the time to offer him up to somebody.
Encarnacion had four hits Friday, including a home run, and has 7 for 7 in the first two games of this series. That, though is his history. For a while, nobody can get him out. Then for a while, he couldn’t hit my Aunt Opal, and she’s in a wheel chair.
If he keeps this up for another week or so, he might be attractive to somebody in a trade. I’m not infield coach, but to me his defense remains deficient.
Anybody else out there besides me who believes that even though he has raised his average from .127 to .227 in two weeks that he should be traded, if anybody will take him?
I know the Reds need some righthanded power in their lineup and he COULD be the man. But he is just as likely to dive into a death stall when the club needs him most - like the last two games of this series and the six-game trip to LA and Chicago.
The Reds have lost nine straight in Dodger Stadium - and they didn’t have Manny Ramirez for any of those games.

I say get rid of EE & BA. Don’t let the back door hit ‘em where the good Lord split ‘em. Also, can we please get rid of their pitching coach? Every time I see him, he looks lost. He’s definitely a “yes” man to Dusty.

Right you are, Wiz. Dusty is the numb skull-in-chief of the Cincinnati Reds. Only a total fool plays a WT after a year of CP. And Dusty is that fool. Agree 100% with your assessment of CD as the reds CF. Shoulda been. As it is, the Reds are a flailing loser team mired in 5th and probably heading for worse #s than last year. Baker’s 3 MOY? He should be awarded dolt of the year for the 2nd year running. The man is an absolute dunce making one stupid boineheaded decision after another. How can they POSSIBLY allow him to continue to trash this team?

At the risk of offending my good friend RC, and perhaps, others: I still believe the abilities of one player are still mostly untapped. Say what you will, but with a different centerfielder, and leadoff hitter{CD}this would be a different team. Here’s why: IF HE PLAYED EVERYDAY IN CENTER-I believe Chris Dickerson would spark this team. He almost carried that off earlier in the season, when he first got a chance in CF{four great catches and some great AB’s}; but, his manager would not let his spark continue, by allowing him to continue there in CF. He kept moving him from bench to various positions, playing an unproductive WT! Baker wouldn’t allow CD to have permanency and comfort. That was a turning point for this season. Allowing CD to play CF, could have turned the season in a different direction-but, it was not to be. No matter whose decision it was-I saw a different team when CD was playing CF. Sure, WT is finally getting on base{although still no base on balls; and hardly much more than infield base hits}. But, he is still not stealing bases-thrown out twice tonight; and is terrible at tracking down fly balls to center/and working the count. He’s still NOT our best CFer! I repeat myself, RC-because it is the truth-and repeating the truth, often is the only way to get through to numb-skulls! CD has much better at bats/could be a much more effective bunter/will take more walks/play better defense/hit the other way/ much better than Dusty’s favorite. Far as I can see, Dimwit Dusty is 0 for two in judging CF and SS talent-and it has cost this team greatly!! Making out lineups is not his forte, especially, when their are few choices.

Brarhopper, you are more interested in keeping your back-up catcher than others? Wow, a rare miss for you. Don’t forget to keep Janish

In two weeks, EE will still be hitting 227 at best. In his next outing, Arroyo will get shelled for 7 runs in 2 innings. I know it is dreaming, but please find a way to unload the following: EE, Arroyo, Harang, Weathers, Gonzalez, Taveras, and……

1 — Change the name of the team to the Permanently Rebuilding Reds (going on 20 years?). #2 — get rid of EE5. #3 — Trade Arroyo. 4 — dump Baker. I mean hey, look at this team and how successful they are WITH these clowns. I’d say the only non-expendable players are Joey, Brandon, Hanigan, Cueto & Volquez. Everybody else is up for grabs.

I’m disappointed with Hal, as I am any time he agrees with Marty. Edwin is the key to this “offense.” His power is crucial to this team and waiting for people without the glove (Frazier, Soto, etc) to show up means abandoning a season which could still go either way. Paired with a real outfielder, a Reds top four of Dickerson, BP, Votto, EdE, new guy, would be as formidable as this club can hope to have in the next two seasons. Trading the only right handed hitter capable of hitting 30 bombs means LESS offense on a team that cannot score. Makes me glad Hal dopesn’t run this team. Just a quick note for the ahistorical, but the Pirates dumped a 3rd baseman on the Cubs years ago because he was “terrible” defensively. That guy has several 100 RBI seasons since and makes the Pirates look like the sort of ill-managed the Reds are TRYING to avoid beoming

To Mark in Sun Valley. Your observation about Edwin E. being so ‘flat’ was also my observation - until last night. Of course he’s 7 for 7 and was on base 8 times in a row - he should be smiling. But I liked that he smiled in the dugout. So he’s serious - is that a problem? Is that something we should hang him for?! For my money, I’d like to see Brandon Phillips NOT smile when they pick him off to end an inning, as he did yesterday - hucking it up with Billy Hatcher. The Indians tried their damndest to change Phillips to be a more (boring?) player. Are we going to try to demand that Encarnacion be a more (fun-loving/smiling?) player? Geez, leave the kid alone and let him be himself. He cares, even if his facial expression doesn’t always show it!

I agree with the guy who mentioned Dunn being run out of town. What do the Reds need now? A power-hitting left fielder - we’ve all been clamoring for it since mid-winter. I guess now it’s Arroyo’s turn to be run out of town. Two games after the all-star game and he’s half-way to 20. Leave him alone! (And he should definitely operate the carpal tunnel - I did it - many have done it - no problems with the mechanics afterwards.) Encarnacion… I don’t know. There is some talent behind him (in the minors, NOT Hairston) but he hits a ton. The only question mark is his scattergun, but he has made marked improvements there, since his first couple of seasons. Defensively - there is NOTHING wrong with his glove. He gets to the balls you expect him to get to. I say keep them both. But please get rid of Geo.Grande. I couldn’t sleep last night, so I got up and turned the ballgame on (I live in Europe) in the 4th inning. I can’t remember how many mistakes the guy made. Encarnacion hit the ball up the middle “past Encarnacion.” When the ball later was hit to CF, he said it was hit to ‘second’. I guess there is some logic to that if you count the three outfield positions…whichever way you count - from right or from left, center would be the second…the guy is a dmbzz!!! He is TERRIBLE!!! Listen to his comments about Mike Cameron taking Brandon Phillips out. I can’t recall now what he said but it was spectacularly redundant. The Reds/Fox Ohio couldn’t afford him (I’m sure he wants to do other things with his summers) but I’d love to hear Johnny Bench and the ‘Cowboy’ as the TV voices of the Reds. Just that downhome twang makes you feel so comfortable - like your favorite pair of old shoes.

Gotta like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Arroyo. Their last two outings have been good. It’s amazing how two major league pitchers can be so remarkably inconsistant. But hey, hopefully they can pitch like they did last night for the rest of the season.

If EE and Bronson don’t implode in the next two weeks, I say trade or sell them both. I like EE’s bat, although he’s a streaky hitter, but those wild throws to first put guys in scoring position who shouldn’t be there. Rosales can fill in at third in the interim. Arroyo can be replaced by Masset in the starting rotation. The Yankees are looking for pitching. Make a move when value is high.

One of the perils of being “of a certain age”. You quote lines from 30 year old movies, and people look at you like crazy Uncle Sal. And speaking of movies, we’ve seen this one dozens of times before - EE gets one of his white hot streaks, and everyone gets stars in their eyes. The he reverts back to his norm, and the throws keep sailing majestically into the 1st base stands. I try to be a positive, bright-side kinda guy, but I wanted EE gone before LAST season.

Admittedly I’m not up on minor league talent throughout the league. But my question is this: Are there a plethora of talented young 3rd basemen who can handle the glove and also provide power in the middle of the lineup? One other question, if you have one of those prospects, why would you trade ‘em? EE is young, that and the absence of a replacement makes me say keep him. It’s a bad feeling when you see a guy playing for another team who goes on to become an All-Star and in my younger days I was a Cub fan and watched them deal Palmeiro, Sutter, Maddox, Moyer and many others. Looking back I’m surprised they hung on to Sandberg.

Boy, I bet these professional scouts don’t know how to look up stats and will offer the moon for EE! You guys are numbskulls! If you trade EE, who plays third this year or next? Janish? Hairston? Maybe they will trade A-Rod, R. Zim, or Longoria straight up becaue you guys are so smart. Have a plan in place before you start dumping salary for the Salad man you nimrods!

You chuckleheads! You want to trade the guy tied for 2nd in wins in the NL, top 10 in innings pitched for what? To lighten Bob C’s bank account? You ran A. Dunn out of here to save him 20 mil, now what do the Reds need? LF, 40 hr, 100 rbi, 100 runs scored? Tell me how the Reds get better not make the Salad man richer!

Given the congestion in the division, I seriously doubt the Reds can contend down the stretch. Especially, with our anemic offense. Rather than gain a moral victory this season (or witness one of those infamous swoons), I would like to see us move Arroyo and Encarnacion so we can pursue a real victory in the next year or two.

Encarnacion is not the 1st streaky Reds 3rd baseman — remember Aaron Boone? Eddie puts up numbers. Take a look at his career. And he’s still young. He knows how to take a walk, too. You aren’t going to find many young 3rd basemen around who can hit, so be careful what you wish for, Hal.

I’ve always been an EE guy and still am. I don’t believe his defense is deficient. His throwing is occasionally deficient, and admittedly that is part of defense, but say his defense is deficient is incorrect. He makes incredible plays down on the corner. To say his defense is deficient is wrong, HOF writer or not. Now, I must also say that I’ve been on the string up Bronson bandwagon, and I just don’t get him. How can he be so awful and then so good? Is the carpal coming and going as far as the pain. One night the shots work and another the pain is still there? I don’t know. Baseball’s a funny game. We’re still out of it and you’re fools to get your hopes up. See you tonight at the game.

EE is a compliment player. EE is not the type of player who can carry a team, which the Reds need. If EE went to a contending team, he would make a terrific role player who can assist a team that is not soley dependent on him. In this situation EE could flurish. I say trade him if a contending team will offer something of value in return and lets move forward in our rebuilding process…..which seems to be the longest rebuilding plan ever recorded on planet earth.

I’d take half a bag of bp balls and a hot dog with extra onions so I’d appear to be tearing up as EE left the stadium.

Totally agree Mark. Has EE finally arrived…can he stay patient, selective & disciplined AB? If so, he could be exactly what the Reds need more of. J Bruce, R U watching & learning? As for BA, he’s strong when he’s well rested. When his velocity drops, U might as well give him another day off. Reds might want to consider changing his routine prior to a start: keep him out of the clubs, eating right & well rested. Perhaps he & others should be flown ahead? Hal, why the hate for Larson? He had a pretty good AAA record & always got hurt when called up. It’s not like he’s not the first AAA player that couldn’t make it in the MLs

Don’t you think other teams see in EE the same things you see? So, what are you gonna get for him? Surely there is an error free third baseman available somewhere! It’s amazing to me he has stayed here as long as he has. (e5)

I have to agree Hal. EE is hot now, but in a week, he’ll be waiving at outside curveballs. The errors he gets are on routine plays. I could deal with trying for and missing the spectacular plays, but he tosses away easy balls. And I know he tries hard and works hard, but he always seems so flat. I am not saying he should be Adam Rosales hyper, but his low key attitude has to affect the other players. I say trade high.
