In retirement, what would your ideal day look like?

MATT PAUL, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I would be on a boat in the middle of the ocean and just lie there. It would be wonderful.&amp;#8221;

JAZMIN COLE, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I probably would move somewhere between the city and the country, doing my own gardening.&amp;#8221;

JEANETTE PETREQUIN, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;I think of a more leisurely sort of day, whether that would be doing crafts, exercising, volunteering, cooking or spending more time with my family.&amp;#8221;

JEAN WEAVER, Clayton: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;d get up an hour later &amp;#8212; 6:30 instead of 5:30, and still go on a walk with the dogs. And not hurry through anything the whole day.&amp;#8221;

MELINDA GILMORE, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;d probably be gardening, cooking and spending time with family and friends.&amp;#8221;

Does the time teens spend social networking increase the likelihood that they will smoke, drink or use drugs? A survey by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse indicated that social networking makes kids five times more likely to smoke, three times more likely to drink and twice as likely to use marijuana.

JIM BABCOCK

JIM BABCOCK, Harrison Twp.: &amp;#8220;Every generation, every five or 10 years, there&amp;#8217;s some new source causing your kids to smoke, drink or do drugs. I think it&amp;#8217;s peer pressure, and maybe social networking adds to that pressure.&amp;#8221;

KATIE NEVAREZ

KATIE NEVAREZ, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;If the parents are monitoring their kids&amp;#8217; Facebook and MySpace, as well as the friends they hang out with, then it shouldn&amp;#8217;t be a problem. Parents lead by example.&amp;#8221;

JACOB HOPPER

JACOB HOPPER, Englewood: &amp;#8220;I know for a fact it&amp;#8217;s true. I was influenced by what I saw on social networking when I was a teenager.&amp;#8221;

VICTORIA DESUTTER

VICTORIA DESUTTER, Fairborn: &amp;#8220;I do feel that social networking has a big effect on teens, especially considering the time they spend on it. And peer pressure is what they use for guidelines these days.&amp;#8221;

JACQUISE JACKSON

JACQUISE JACKSON, Jefferson Twp.: &amp;#8220;Social networking removes the human interaction, the real-life environment. Boundaries of the social network are limited to only those you let in. In real life, your choices of influence are broader.&amp;#8221;

How often do you use your local library? Have computers made them less necessary?

ANTHONY HEAD

ANTHONY HEAD, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I use the library every single week. I&amp;#8217;ve absolutely loved the library all my life. I&amp;#8217;ve got four books our right now, and some waiting. We&amp;#8217;ve got one of the best library systems in the country.&amp;#8221;

MARY BRANDSTETTER

MARY BRANDSTETTER, Fairborn: &amp;#8220;I haven&amp;#8217;t been to a library in many years. For a while they cut back their hours, and I just got out of the habit. I now have a network of book sharers. But I wouldn&amp;#8217;t want to see libraries go away. My children use them.&amp;#8221;

MARY PAT SAVORD

MARY PAT SAVORD, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m from Toledo, and I used the library there a lot. My mom and I like to get books on tape and listen to them in the car. I would rather borrow a book than buy it, and even more so with books on tape.&amp;#8221;

KEITH BOYER

KEITH BOYER, Wright-Patterson AFB: &amp;#8220;We don&amp;#8217;t use it very often &amp;#8212; maybe four or five times a year. We used it more often when we were kids. Certainly, technology has something to do with that.&amp;#8221;

CAITLIN PETIT

CAITLIN PETIT, Miamisburg: &amp;#8220;I just graduated from college, so I hadn&amp;#8217;t used the local library very much since I was in high school. But I used the college library all the time. I now live in the area, and I just got my library card two days ago, and I&amp;#8217;m so excited to get all my books there.&amp;#8221;

Do you use your cell phone to take the majority of your pictures? Are cell phones making cameras obsolete?

JACKIE STEFANOFF

JACKIE STEFANOFF, Oakwood: &amp;#8220;We really don&amp;#8217;t take our cameras anywhere as much as we used to. My daughter has a smart phone that&amp;#8217;s smarter than I am, and it really does take great pictures.&amp;#8221;

MEGAN BAIRD

MEGAN BAIRD, Sidney: &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t use my cell-phone camera ever. I use a small digital camera.&amp;#8221;

DESHONA PEPPER ROBERTSON

DESHONA PEPPER ROBERTSON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;Cell phone only, for some time now.&amp;#8221;

MATT GREEN

MATT GREEN, Washington Twp.: &amp;#8220;Our family mainly uses cameras. We don&amp;#8217;t get the smart phones. We have the old flip phones.&amp;#8221;

D.J. BAIRD

What&amp;#8217;s your impression of nursing homes you&amp;#8217;ve visited? A recent report said one in 10 Ohio nursing homes was faulted for substandard care in the last four years.

MARY SKAROUPKA

MARY SKAROUPKA, Englewood: &amp;#8220;I worked in two nursing homes. One was terrible, and one was fantastic. People need to do their homework before putting a loved one in a nursing home. And don&amp;#8217;t let them know when you&amp;#8217;re coming. Just drop in.&amp;#8221;

PAUL BALOG

PAUL BALOG, Columbus: &amp;#8220;The only experience I&amp;#8217;ve had was with my mother-in-law, who passed away a few years ago. We weren&amp;#8217;t particularly happy with how she was treated. They tend to overmedicate the more difficult patients.&amp;#8221;

SHEENA NIPPER

SHEENA NIPPER, Xenia: &amp;#8220;Things may be better when you have 24-hour staff and the family can visit around the clock. But based on my experience, where the care wasn&amp;#8217;t always that great, I wouldn&amp;#8217;t want to make the decision for someone in my family to go into a nursing home.&amp;#8221;

SHERYL ZIMMERMAN

SHERYL ZIMMERMAN, Huber Heights: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;ve only been to one in this area. It was very nice, clean, pleasant, with nice wallpaper and plants. I&amp;#8217;d been to some in Texas that were also very nice. But, of course, you can&amp;#8217;t know what&amp;#8217;s going on behind the scenes.&amp;#8221;

STEVE OWENS

STEVE OWENS, Huber Heights: &amp;#8220;I haven&amp;#8217;t really visited any lately. I would think they might be better these days, with all the new construction and the assisted-living facilities that are available now.&amp;#8221;

Is it wrong to sneak snacks and drinks into a movie theater? Dear Abby says it&amp;#8217;s dishonest and sets a bad example for kids.

KIM TEDRICK

KIM TEDRICK, Fairborn: &amp;#8220;I do it all the time, because the food they offer there is not what I want to eat. I don&amp;#8217;t want popcorn and hot dogs and nachos.&amp;#8221;

ELIZABETH GOINS

ELIZABETH GOINS, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t think it&amp;#8217;s that bad. People do it because the prices are outrageous. You end up paying more for snacks than to see the movie.&amp;#8221;

DAVE LANDOM

DAVE LANDOM, Bellbrook: &amp;#8220;No, because they&amp;#8217;re charging such horrible prices for snacks. It&amp;#8217;s ridiculous. I think it&amp;#8217;s perfectly OK to bring in snacks.&amp;#8221;

CHARLOTTE HARRISON

CHARLOTTE HARRISON, Xenia: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;ve done it, because their snacks are too expensive. I think it&amp;#8217;s a common practice. A family can&amp;#8217;t afford it, so they take their own food.&amp;#8221;

LAVONE BERRY

LAVONE BERRY, Xenia: &amp;#8220;A lot of people do take their own snacks, but I don&amp;#8217;t. I usually don&amp;#8217;t bother with a snack at all during a movie.&amp;#8221;

Should Home Economics be a required course in public schools? A recent New York Times column said reviving Home Ec would help fight obesity and chronic disease by teaching nutrition and healthy food preparation.

SHELBY RICHARDSON

SHELBY RICHARDSON, Riverside: &amp;#8220;I took Personal Development, which included Home Ec. You learned how to sew &amp;#8212; we made pillows &amp;#8212; and to cook. We made an omelet, quesadillas, chicken wraps. They should require it, especially for guys. A lot of girls took it, but it wasn&amp;#8217;t required.&amp;#8221;

JANICE BLACKWELL

JANICE BLACKWELL, Virginia Beach, Va.: &amp;#8220;I have a niece who just turned 18 and has moved in with me. I&amp;#8217;m finding out there are so many basic things teenagers just don&amp;#8217;t know. Home Ec could always be beneficial.&amp;#8221;

JOANNE DETOMASO

JOANNE DETOMASO, Sugarcreek Twp.: &amp;#8220;No. Those skills can easily be embedded in other courses. Instead of sitting through a Home Ec course, students can be taught cooking skills, for example, in a math class &amp;#8212; learning the mathematics of a recipe. In health, they can teach nutrition. In a Life Skills class, they learn about taking care of a baby.&amp;#8221;

SHARLENE TROUT

SHARLENE TROUT, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;It certainly couldn&amp;#8217;t hurt. It&amp;#8217;s a foundational course for life. We opt for the easy things in life too often, such as buying fast food instead of preparing our own.&amp;#8221;

KAYLA FULTZ

KAYLA FULTZ, Sidney: &amp;#8220;In middle school, we had a wellness program for two years that included Home Ec, nutrition and gym. We learned about a proper diet and staying active. And we cooked. I remember making cookies and pie.&amp;#8221;

ANDREA DETOMASO

ANDREA DETOMASO, Columbus: &amp;#8220;It should be required. It would help in daily living. I grew up in a family where my dad did his share of the cooking and the laundry. It&amp;#8217;s good for both men and women to learn.&amp;#8221;

JAMES HUBBARD

JAMES HUBBARD, Xenia: &amp;#8220;Probably John Bryan State Park. It&amp;#8217;s quiet and serene.&amp;#8221;

SARAH MOORE

SARAH MOORE, Dayton: &amp;#8220;The Sugarcreek Reserve is where we always go. They even have buckeye trees, so you should be able to find some buckeyes about now. And it&amp;#8217;s just beautiful when the leaves change colors along the river and the walking trails.&amp;#8221;

ALYSSA PERROY

ALYSSA PERROY, Oakwood: &amp;#8220;I think Hills and Dales MetroPark is nice. I like the way the raised plank paths go directly through the woods, and you can see the reflection of the leaves in the pond there.&amp;#8221;

JIM DELABAR

JIM DELABAR, Centerville: &amp;#8220;Indian Lake. There&amp;#8217;s a lot of trees to see on the way up, and along the water. We have a house there.&amp;#8221;

STEVE MCMANAMON

STEVE MCMANAMON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;The Five Rivers MetroParks, in general, are great. My personal favorite is Sugarcreek Reserve. It&amp;#8217;s got nice, well-maintained trails.&amp;#8221;

What advice do you have for people who are looking for a job right now?

HOMER RISSINGER

HOMER RISSINGER, West Milton: &amp;#8220;Don&amp;#8217;t give up, and be willing to take a lesser paying job, because it&amp;#8217;s easier to get a job if you have a job.&amp;#8221;

BRIAN HUNT

BRIAN HUNT, Bellbrook: &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re employers. One of our biggest pet peeves is when we advertise and people respond with terrible grammar, punctuation and spelling. They use texting language, such as &amp;#8216;u&amp;#8217; for &amp;#8216;you.&amp;#8217; We don&amp;#8217;t even look at those applications.&amp;#8221;

LINDA HENDERSON

LINDA HENDERSON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;Just tell them not to give up, to keep trying, to try to be the early bird. Get up, get moving, keep pounding. Perseverance means everything.&amp;#8221;

KAREN PIRRELLO

KAREN PIRRELLO, Centerville: &amp;#8220;Our daughter&amp;#8217;s been looking for a job in interior design for nine months. She has worked very hard networking online, through her university, through friends and family. She&amp;#8217;s had great interviews. The companies don&amp;#8217;t have openings, but promise they&amp;#8217;ll call when they do. They seem to be worried that the economy will fall again.&amp;#8221;

NICK DEBARMORE

NICK DEBARMORE, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m lucky, because I&amp;#8217;m in the military, so I&amp;#8217;m kind of set. The military is always an option to consider.&amp;#8221;

Have you ever pretended to use a cell phone to avoid talking to someone? Thirteen percent of respondents in a recent survey admitted doing so.

ANGELA BROWN

ANGELA BROWN, West Carrollton: &amp;#8220;I think I&amp;#8217;m genuinely addicted to mine. There&amp;#8217;s a reason they call it a Crackberry. If you see me on my cell, I&amp;#8217;m not pretending to use it.&amp;#8221;

MARKITA BELL

MARKITA BELL, Harrison Twp.: &amp;#8220;I do it all the time. I do it when I don&amp;#8217;t want to engage in conversation with the person approaching me, maybe somebody who is trouble or annoying, someone I don&amp;#8217;t want to be involved with.&amp;#8221;

EARL THOMPSON

EARL THOMPSON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I personally haven&amp;#8217;t. I would just turn and walk away to avoid someone. But I&amp;#8217;d be nice about it. There&amp;#8217;s no need to be rude.&amp;#8221;

AYREON WILKINSON

AYREON WILKINSON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;Yes. My friends and I will be sitting outside, and people will drive by looking at us, and I&amp;#8217;ll get on the phone and pretend I&amp;#8217;m calling my mom or a friend.&amp;#8221;

Is there a neighborhood watch group where you live?

BREE LANGEMO

BREE LANGEMO, Dayton: &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re from St. Anne&amp;#8217;s Hill Historic District, and we have sort of an informal network. When crime picks up, we&amp;#8217;ll send an e-mail around. Sometimes neighbors take turns taking bike rides or walking patrols at night. But it&amp;#8217;s nothing consistent.&amp;#8221;

VINCENT ALEXANDER

VINCENT ALEXANDER, Kettering: &amp;#8220;I just moved to my neighborhood, so I&amp;#8217;m not sure. My neighbors do seem to talk to each other, though. If I had time and it worked with my busy schedule, I would join one. They&amp;#8217;re definitely a good idea.&amp;#8221;

DONNA WINCHESTER

DONNA WINCHESTER, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I live in the DeWeese Ridgecrest neighborhood, and we have a wonderful neighborhood watch. It&amp;#8217;s organized and active, in cooperation with the Dayton police. We have e-mail alerts and updates. But it&amp;#8217;s more than just about crime. They send e-mails out about lost animals and other things, too.&amp;#8221;

MICHELLE BENTON

MICHELLE BENTON, Clayton: &amp;#8220;No. I live in a real small, quiet area in Clayton. I&amp;#8217;ve lived there all my life, and everyone knows everyone. We all kind of watch out for each other.&amp;#8221;

LUANA WALLACE

LUANA WALLACE, Lewisburg: &amp;#8220;We don&amp;#8217;t have a neighborhood crime watch, but the police chief lives three doors down, and the neighbors seem to look out for one another.&amp;#8221;

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?

RON ITZKOWITZ

RON ITZKOWITZ, Union: &amp;#8220;Working with my dad at a pawn shop when I was 11 or 12. I learned that life was hard. People have problems, and sometimes the solution was selling things that meant a lot to them.&amp;#8221;

DANNY FINLEY

DANNY FINLEY, Dayton: &amp;#8220;I worked for my dad, who was an electrician. Then when I was 18, I was a machinist apprentice. I enjoyed it. I learned how to get along with people.&amp;#8221;

KELLY VERDIER

KELLY VERDIER, Dayton: &amp;#8220;Picking strawberries in Brown County, Indiana, in 1949 when I was 9 years old. I was paid a nickel a box. My next job was at The Nashville House restaurant in Nashville, Ind. I was very shy, and it was hard for me to talk to people, but I had to in that job. It was very good for improving my self-worth.&amp;#8221;

CHRIS HARPER

CHRIS HARPER, Oakwood: &amp;#8220;I worked in Orchard Park, N.Y., at the concession stand at an ice-skating rink. The women who came up to the stand were so demanding and rude, I just decided I would never treat people like that.&amp;#8221;

PAUL GALLAGHER

PAUL GALLAGHER, Huber Heights: &amp;#8220;I was a paper boy for the Akron Beacon Journal for three years, starting when I was 14. It taught me that hard work pays off.&amp;#8221;

<title>Should a mom face neglect charges for letting her child ride a bike to school?</title>

A Tennessee mom has been threatened with child neglect charges for letting her 10-year-old daughter ride her bike to school. The ride takes less than 10 minutes, but police say the unstriped residential street is unsafe. Should it be up to the parent to decide, or should police intervene?

LAURA MCCALL

LAURA MCCALL, Kettering: &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t think it&amp;#8217;s neglectful to let your child ride a bike to school. However, it would be wise for the community to take the necessary precautions for children on certain roads, such as providing sidewalks and making drivers aware of when children are going to and from schools.&amp;#8221;

KATHY EVERSON

KATHY EVERSON, Kettering: &amp;#8220;To say that is neglect is going way too far. You&amp;#8217;re encouraging exercise, and it&amp;#8217;s only 10 minutes away.&amp;#8221;

JARED WATSON

JARED WATSON, Cedarville: &amp;#8220;When I first think of a 10-year-old riding her bike to school, I think, &amp;#8216;Oh my gosh, no way.&amp;#8217; But then I haven&amp;#8217;t seen the streets, so I don&amp;#8217;t know. In some situations, I might think the mom is absolutely insane, but in other situations, I&amp;#8217;d think it could be just fine.&amp;#8221;

MARCIE MOORE

MARCIE MOORE, Kettering: &amp;#8220;I have a problem with agencies getting so involved with parenting and not allowing parents to make their own decisions, especially when there are more critical kinds of cases they could be involved in.&amp;#8221;

KISTEN PHILLIPS

KISTEN PHILLIPS, Dayton: &amp;#8220;My first reaction is no, it shouldn&amp;#8217;t be child neglect. But if there are reports that a child perished riding a bike there, then that might be different. Maybe instead of charging the mom, they should be charging their town to put in sidewalks and enforce the speed limit there.&amp;#8221;

<title>Do you expect most employers to continue offering health insurance after the federal insurance exchanges start in 2014?</title>

Do you expect most employers to continue offering health insurance to workers after the federal insurance exchanges start in 2014? A recent survey found that 1 out of every 10 mid-sized to large employers said they will stop offering health insurance, even if they must pay fines and penalties. Another 20 percent said they haven&amp;#8217;t decided yet.

ANNIE LAWSON

ANNIE LAWSON, Dayton: &amp;#8220;That isn&amp;#8217;t something that I&amp;#8217;ve thought about too much. Being a teacher in a very supportive district, I would expect my employer to continue to offer health-care options.&amp;#8221;

ROGER SIMON

ROGER SIMON, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;Any quality employer will continue it. Unfortunately, we have increasing numbers of employers who are less than good.&amp;#8221;

AARON WOLPERT

AARON WOLPERT, Dayton: &amp;#8220;At this point there&amp;#8217;s so much uncertainty that I don&amp;#8217;t think what employers say today will have much bearing in three years. I think government-subsidized or single-payer health care would be far superior to what most employers offer, in any case. But I have no idea what the health-care exchanges will be like.&amp;#8221;

SUSAN LAWSON

SUSAN LAWSON, Butler Twp.: &amp;#8220;I would like to think that employers would do the right thing and still offer health care to their employees.&amp;#8221;

JOHANNA RYAN

JOHANNA RYAN, Chicago: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m concerned about it. It&amp;#8217;s important to know that there will be no government insurance, even though I think there should be. You&amp;#8217;re going to have to buy a private insurance policy from the same private insurance companies. I think we&amp;#8217;re going to see a lot of higher deductibles and higher co-pays. I think we need national health care.&amp;#8221;

DAN LAWSON

DAN LAWSON, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;I work for the federal government, so I&amp;#8217;m assuming I&amp;#8217;m going to have health care for the foreseeable future.&amp;#8221;

<title>Should you have to be 21 to play slots in Ohio?</title>

You&amp;#8217;ll have to be 21 to play the slots at Ohio&amp;#8217;s new casinos, but officials are still debating whether it should be 18 or 21 for slots at horse-racing tracks. What do you think?

JOTHAN SMITH

JOTHAN SMITH, Beavercreek: &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t gamble, but if I had to pick, I&amp;#8217;d probably say 21. I know when I was 18 to 20, money was like water to some kids. They don&amp;#8217;t know how to be frugal. A couple more years might help that.&amp;#8221;

JOANNE LEVI

JOANNE LEVI, Kettering: &amp;#8220;That&amp;#8217;s kind of a moral issue. It&amp;#8217;s about what the parents feel if someone&amp;#8217;s still at home. I think they should all be 21. The younger you are, the more you&amp;#8217;re influenced by peer groups. When you&amp;#8217;re 21, you have more experience, possibly a couple years of college, and you&amp;#8217;re supposed to understand responsibility. I don&amp;#8217;t really like the idea of gambling in Ohio anyway, but it&amp;#8217;s all about choices.&amp;#8221;

MELISSA MCINTIRE

MELISSA MCINTIRE, Beavercreek Twp.: &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m not a gambler. I think someone at age 18 might not understand all the consequences of their actions. And if it&amp;#8217;s 21 in one place, it needs to be 21 everywhere.&amp;#8221;

JEFF WIEBELL

JEFF WIEBELL, Goshen: &amp;#8220;Brain research states that age 25 is when your cognitive reasoning really shows up. At 18, you&amp;#8217;re seven years away from that. They don&amp;#8217;t see all the consequences, even for making a left turn &amp;#8212; they think they can make it and act accordingly. Why let them gamble away money at that age?&amp;#8221;

ARIEL ANDERSON

ARIEL ANDERSON, Anchorage, Alaska: &amp;#8220;In the end, people are going to find a way to do what they want. But if they&amp;#8217;re going to make a rule, the higher the age, the better.&amp;#8221;
