Do you think Americans’ daily shower habit is overrated?
A recent New York Times story featured people who don’t think it’s necessary to shower every day. They say they are conserving water while retaining their skin’s natural oils. Do you think Americans’ daily shower habit is overrated?
HOLLY SHIELDS, Sugarcreek Twp.: “Yes. Unless you’re a person who perspires a lot, that’s not necessary. I have very soft skin, and I think it’s largely due to not drying it out every day.”
LINDA HAMILTON, Huber Heights: “I don’t think so. A shower is coffee to me. I have to have it every day.”
SHAY MOLIQUE, Springboro: “I guess as long as they’re still washing their faces and brushing their teeth, and they don’t smell, it would be OK.”
ELAINE WIEDENHEFT, Miami Twp.: “No. I sometimes shower just to make myself feel good. I’ll shower twice a day if I’ve been working in the yard. But I’m conservative with my shower pressure and the time I’m in there.”
SARAH EVANS, Kettering: “No. I shower every day. That’s just a part of personal hygiene.”

There are only 2 or 3 areas of the body that generate odors. You can never take a shower or bath and still not smell if you just wash those areas. I read an article by a dermatologist who recommended doing this. He said you should also exfoliate other body parts to get rid of dead skin - using a wash cloth or a body scrubber or something like that. He said it’s better for your skin.

Mike read one article, and now he knows the truth. He says to clean these “2 or 3 areas” (well, is it two or three, Mike(?)…and if you miss the third, (or 1st or 2nd)will you smell?…if you miss the third, what’s the point in washing the 1st or 2nd?). Exfoliating? Sounds like when fall comes and the trees shed thier leaves. If you’re going to “exfoliate”, why not wipe off the rest of your body with the bare minimum amount of “precious water”. I’d sure like you as one of my employees, Mike. I’d start the “Smell Department”, with you as the head limburger cheese. I’d hire you out to various deodorant/soap companies to help them develope products (that, according to your one dermatoligist article) will “be better for your skin”. Idiot. I bet you read one article on Obama and voted for him. Oh, he smells too, and he takes showers/baths.

Where is it written that if we don’t shower or bathe every day that we’ll smell? I have very dry skin and hardly perspire. I recently started showering everything other day and it has helped immensely. I’ve never even commented on here but just HAD to respond to all the close-minded comments. YOUR way is not the only way to do something. I seriously had to laugh at everybody being so judgmental about this.

All you sidewalk dermatoligists need to get off your high hourse. Everyone has different types of skin issues and the body reacts to the seasons differently. The germaphobes out there are not doing yourself any favor by washing every 2 minutes, it doesn’t give your body a chance to build up an ammune system. If you stink wash. It has nothing to do with water conservation.

Thank you, seriously. I believe Organ/Mike might smell/Nose are correct. BUT!!! (here comes the “but”, I believe they’ve been around some smelly people, It’ possible military (not too much hygiene in combat situations) and they can’t understand not being clean/odor free in a “shower/bath enhanced” invironment.

Wow - you guys are all so right. What on earth was I think actually using my brain to form my own thoughts and opinions about what is best for my own body instead of just doing what everybody else says and does? Thank you all for helping me see the error of my smelly ways and not realizing that my own nose, in fact, does NOT work, nor does my brain. I am forever indebted your holier than thou selves!

Non-smelly: Ya know, for a dry skinned opinionated non-herd skank, you’re not too smelly, and not too bad, in my book. What does make you perspire(?)…if I may ask? If not, no wonder you’re not asked out on dates…………

Some people like to bathe in beer with their friends…they be ‘in my book’; under silly punks with a future ahead of them.

Not everyone has to shower every day. However, I do. If I don’t my hair gets greasy, and it is readily apparent that I did not shower. I don’t want to look like a bum.

It is very rare that I do not shower daily. I have great skin that does not seem to be affected by it. However, I do perspire enough to require a shower daily. My opinion, if you need one take one.

There is no good physical reason to wash and perfume away the natural odors of the human body. We have been socialized to believe that these odors “stink,” so we obsess about showering. Basically, by “socialized” I mean to say convinced by companies that sell us us soap, shampoo and other personal hygiene products. If you think I stink, that is your problem, not mine. I’m going to give up showering entirely.
