Do today’s TV commercials offend you?

Are you embarrassed or offended by any of the commercials on TV? Should some subjects be taboo?

DARLENE DOLL

DARLENE DOLL, Dayton: “I know of one — the Jeep commercial, because it says ‘I live. I ride. I am.’ There’s only one ‘I am’ — God is ‘I am.’ And I’m writing to Jeep to let them know how I feel.”

ddnchatDarrylMcGowan.JPG
DARRYL MCGOWAN

DARRYL MCGOWAN, Trotwood: “The one against cigarettes with a lot of people lying on the ground like they’re dead. You can’t make anyone stop doing what they want to do.”

ddnchatLindseyBarrera.JPG
LINDSEY BARRERA

LINDSEY BARRERA, Xenia: “Maybe not banned, but some could be censored or only shown during certain hours. I understand it’s good that guys know about tampons and yeast infections, but it doesn’t need to be plastered all over the television.”

ddnchatDanishaVassar.JPG
DANISHA VASSAR

DANISHA VASSAR, Beavercreek: “Yes — some of the Victoria’s Secret commercials. Even though I am a customer, I’m kind of embarrassed by some of their commercials.”

ddnchatMarkBuschur.JPG
MARK BUSCHUR

MARK BUSCHUR, Beavercreek: “Absolutely not. I think they can be even more revealing with everything from Victoria’s Secret to the late-night commercials for gentlemen’s clubs.”

Offended no, embarrassed sometimes. We do seem to be bombarded with erectile dysfunction ads but the rest such as feminine hygiene products are really just a fact of life. A previous poster mentioned the late night Gentleman’s Clubs, those are just sad and should be more of an embarressment for the girls in them.

Aggravated, embarrassed, somewhat offended. Yes maybe all the above. Some commercials are just absurd. If you were to mute the television and watch certain commercials, you would never know that what they are advertising, you can have a man and a woman making out, ready to make love, and its a commercial for cologne. Its unbelievable. Me personally, living in a christian home with a child, and husband watching even the 5 o’clock news and the commercials afterwards make me very uncomfortable with my daughter looking at me, like: ewe.

If anything were changed, I think that prescription drugs should have NO place on television. It is bad enough that doctors already give prescriptions based on incentives from companies. I think, outside of that, most commercials are fine in their time slots. More femanine commercials during soap operas, more masculine commercials during sports. Really aren’t any BAD commercials until late-night, which is fine.

Quite the contrary. I find it offensive that our commercials are censored to the degree they are compared to other countries when we are the ones that supposedly value free speech so much. As for the “christian home” spin, do you keep your children from reading the bible? There is far racier and violent stuff in there.

How about the KY his-n-hers lubricants? Those commercials are so NOT appropriate during family programming! I’m no prude, but I don’t need my kids to see that stuff.

The feminine products commercials are not good. Mother Nature delivering the monthly “gift” to a young girl is not appropriate. Also, the couple laying in bed after using some sort of lubricant for sex is very inappropriate. We know people use condoms and they should, but must be have commercials about them and their size?

Offensive? No. There are plenty of annoying commercials, and the drug spots are probably counter-productive overall, but not really offensive.

Great the offended police are out, If you don’t like commercials turn the idiot box off problem solved!

Yup. I’m offended by a lot of them. People are stupid - but not all. And I don’t need my 11-year-old boy seeing almost nude models. I’m with James though. I don’t watch TV! It’s the kids’ programming. Tampax during Yu Gi Oh. UGH!

I really get tired of seeing erectile dysfunction commercials during football on Sunday. I know that that’s prime time for the intended audience, but they could be a little more subtle.

The commercials for scary/horror movies are too much. If I wanted to be scared and frightened then I would go see that movie. These commercials go against natural human nature. In victoria Secret commercials, sex and the human body is natural. Watching someone being chased and murdered isn’t.

I really find all of the commercials for erectile dysfunction, Ky lubricants for him/her and other feminine products in very bad taste. They are shown in time periods when many children are watching. I think these are things they do not have to see advertised on TV.

Not so much on Commercials, but come on , ” reality tv” is this really what we want our children believing , is how people act to their friends and family and that its funny and or how young ladies should behave and dress?

IMO it is time for commercial ratings. We have the technology and I use it to block certain shows on my DirecTV box. For example I block shows that are tv-14 and worse and movies that are pg-13 or worse from my 10 year old. However while watching a football game the commercials for the tv-14 shows that I am blocking come right on with the worst punch lines of the show. I am all against censorship but commercials make it almost impossible to take care of it myself. I find myself immediately turning to another game when commercials come on.

Many commercials are inappropriate, and that’s why we don’t watch television. If there is a show we want to see, we get it on DVD. Problem solved. It does make me wonder, however, why companies want or feel the need to cater to the baser elements of human nature, instead of the more noble and virtuous. But hey- if sex and greed sells everything from cars to toilet paper, then knock yourself out.

television stations should use better judgement when showing inappropriate commercials during periods when young viewers could be watching. not only are they offensive, but it’s hard on the parents that have to explain their meanings.

The only thing ‘offensive’ about commercials is their desperation. Quick cuts (count the number of edits in a 30 sec spot), flashing lights (which instinctively draw the focus of the eye), herky-jerky camera work and over-the-top actors all add up to an advertiser and a carrier pathetic in their attempt to get your attention. They know that the mute button is used without mercy thanks to their own too-loud sound mixes and annoying sound FX like ringing phones, buzzers, heavy metal soundtracks, etc. What’s the last familiar slogan from a commercial? Answer: there aren’t many because they know that people have muted their noisy rubbish. DVR use continues to rise yet advertisers and broadcasters cling to their hopelessly archaic system.

Hey - nice blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m currently using Wordpress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
