Too early for Christmas?
Our question of the day on our websites is, “When is a good time to start celebrating Christmas?” According to some local communities, the answer is this weekend, as our holiday events roundup shows.
I’d like to elaborate on that a little bit. Is it really true that Christmas sales and such seem to start earlier every year, as so many of us observe? To me, it’s no small wonder that you see so many Christmas trees on the curb on Dec. 26. People are burnt out on Christmas well before New Year’s gets here.
I’m heading to La Comedia’s “White Christmas” this Friday. The dinner theater always starts its holiday shows in early November, and it still feels odd to me to get Christmas-y that soon.
If Christmas really does come earlier and earlier, maybe we ought to start with the Christmas in July sales and just have that be the kickoff.
Not that the ultra-commercialization of Christmas is anything new. As Lucy observed in “A Charlie Brown Christmas” - “Everyone knows Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate, you know.”
And that was 45 years ago ….
