What would you change about Middfest?

Well, another Middfest has come and gone. Did any of you reading this go? If so, what did you think? And if you didn’t go, why not?

I talked to a number of folks at the opening Friday night, and a lot of people seem to agree Middfest seems smaller than it used to be - “more compact” was the term one man used. Is that your observation? And do you think this is because Middfest is spread out differently, or because there’s actually not as much to see?

Let’s say you were in charge of Middfest. What would you change?

I didn’t attend Midfest. The last few years the countries haven’t been very interesting. If I was in charge of Midfest I would start inviting certain states to be part of Midfest. Every state has a tourism association. Some states could be put together. Several examples would be: New England states, Carolinas, Great Lakes states, Four Corner states. There is alot of history and things to do and see. More families are looking for less expensive vacations. I’m sure all states tourism associations would like to promote their states.

The crowds was small Friday night, I was there for a customery drop in for food. Very disappointed in only seeing four venders. Great Meatball Sub though. Midfest seems to have a central theme of culture, I’m not sure that many poeple in Middletown anyome care too much about cultures in other nations as they are having issues jobs and just living. The timing of this year’s event couldn’t have been worse, bad weather Saturday and a chilly Sunday. What would I change, I would just go for a Fall Festival.

I went to Midfest and there is definitely less to see. I think Botswana was a fascinating country but learned very little about it at Midfest. I am a student at Miami and I was hoping to learn more about the country since I am taking a class that studies African culture. I found very little literature! I bought some handmade African jewelry from a vendor…many items were very expensive of course. The drums and decorative pieces were beautiful…but wasn’t looking to spend that much at a festival. There was plenty of food…way over priced, typical of any festival. Nothing for kids to do except moon bounce… what does that teach about culture? Oh and that costed money also. Why would I pay for that when plenty of churches have festivals where this activity for children is free? One thing that was cool is the kids got to draw artwork with chalk on the walls and that would have been really cool if they would have explained what that had to do with the culture also. There wasn’t enough information!

First, I would change the cost of admission. $2 is plenty. And the cost to vendors is outlandish compare to others. No wonder their is little to offer. 501C3 organizations wants to make a profit while getting their name out there. The last few years the timing and cost of the festival has kept me away. Plus, to be frankly honest, the countries they have had as themes haven’t been that quite interesting. Maybe, they should look into doing a fall jamboree the last weekend of Sept and invite local vendors and 501C3 organizations at a reasonable cost. Doing a fall theme esp with a bazaar,I think would bring in the people.

Like most folks in Middletown, I’m a briar and my dad and his dad were briars. How about a Midfest celebrating Appalachian heritage. Get rid of the venders who only show up to make a buck and bring in somebody to cook up some Burgoo. Blacks, Irish, Germans and many more have a rich heritage from KY. I can’t get excited about a culture from Mars. I’m pretty typical.

As long as the New England wanna bees are involved in the operation, there will only be themes unrelated to our area. Middletown needs a midfest just like LUKE mentioned and the the overly educated should teach geography in the classroom and not at the local yearly Midfest. Go away all you artsy fartsy people.
